The New York Mets and the San Diego Padres are on the verge of a deal that would send Mike Cameron to San Diego, baseball officials told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Wednesday.

The Mets will get first baseman/outfielder Xavier Nady in the deal for Cameron.

Newsday reported on its Web site Wednesday that the deal had been agreed to pending a physical to check Cameron's eyesight. Cameron missed much of August and all of September after breaking both cheekbones and his nose in a frightening collision with Carlos Beltran in San Diego last season. The newspaper reported that the Padres have agreed to pay Cameron's entire $7 million salary for 2006.

Mike Nicotera, the agent for Cameron, says he has no comment, and that he and Cameron will speak when the time is appropriate. But the Padres and the Mets reportedly agreed to this deal during the GM meetings last week in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Padres nearly signed Cameron as a free agent after the 2003 season and still have a need for someone to patrol center field at Petco Park. Cameron won Gold Gloves in 2001 and 2003 playing center field for Seattle.
