I know the payoffs are higher at bigger tracks but after hitting a real small local harness tracks 3 times in last few weeks. It is SQUARE CITY. I have profited $60-150 all 3 times, betting $20 bucks a race. The crowd doesn't have one serious player in the bunch. You can find 4-1 shots all day who should be favored. I know the track overall is tough but I'm beginning to think i am on to something if I start to take this all little more serious.

Big always. You can have an impact on a small handle track if you bet like I do. The bigger the better.

Always a big track. If you are a large player, the mutual pool will be less affected by your bet then at a small track and therefore your odds and payout will be better. Unless you play off track and at a offshore book where you wager does not go into the mutual pool.

I have always agreed with you guys because I usually bet too much at the small track to kill my odds but I guess my point should have been their are more OVERLAYS at a small track, you think so? Not saying you can crush a race at small track and that is the problem but seems like you grind out a profit

Small sample, but after 1.5 years of watching\playing, I owned Fonner.

Same shit, different day is an understatement

yeah i agree,...meaning if i am just about in the blind as anyone,...the larger track will always rule,....................now that said,...have one connection to a great trainer at a smaller track,......it shows up so much on the odds,.....that it is tough to make a buck,........great times,..always valued the opinions, etc,....but after the first year and the limits the offshores put on thistledowns in ohio,....it was just a fantasy to think it was possible to capture a large sum/pool,................it has since somewhat cooled down, but i assure you by no means is it gauranteed!! gl though:103631605

Easier to make money at smsll tracks - just can not make real money.

East Moline Downs - had a great five years there. (Now closed)
Sometimes the horses would return within 3 days - not many on the grounds.
And most days $20 would affect the odds.

i hear ya twocard,....use to play the small track,...in ohio,...just one trianer,....konkoly,...thing is,...at that time,...his win percentage was so dang high,....it caught on quick,.........still brings some good texas breds up there,...but as far as i know,....not sure he is gonna fall into thier agenda again this year,.....the guy works so hard, and year after year they tell him to come there and that there gonna get slots,.......same old story,....back in the day,...could take the good ponys over to mountaineer,....but now everyone is there, so its basically not very profitable for him to bring them up to ohio,......it is a great tool in showing what can be done though!!, seriously had some(want to be big offshores) limit play, just like the most smallest of places around!!

Tough for me to win at either big or small tracks, that is why I don't play them. Have a close pal that kills the small tracks though, and I mean small. He said a beer vendor once got pushed out in the straightaway as the horses were coming and it knocked him out of his trifecta as he ran 2nd. Rumor has it he stopped to sell a couple of beers along the way too. Those horses were slow, very very slow.

my point exactly. I can't bet over 20 -30 bucks without ruining the odds but it keeps me in check. I know the payoffs aren't great in tri's but you can grind a little profit against a crowd that is ALL their for entertainment.

big handle = bigger value. Of course I'll hit a higher % grinding out winners at Freehold or Pocono Downs, but I'd much rather take a shot at the bigger payouts.

The best value found at small tracks is the exotic wagering carry-overs. Yes - you may have to wait a long time.

My favorite track used to be Timonium. Only ran 2 weeks a year during the Maryland State Fair. Small handle but almost all sucker money. The track was small, and the turns were almost banked. Huge speed biased, but the public never seem to catch on. Would go out every Sat. and Sun. and make decent coin. Hit quite a few triples there, with payouts much bigger than what they should have been.

BD, the only problem I have with living in Costa Rica is, no track. Nothing like watching the ponies live.

Whaddup Judge? Me and you musta been bumping into each other parking in front ofthose stores across the street. You remember Phil Grove? That SOB cost me more races, I got to the point where I just threw him out EVERY race. Remember how we'd get the CT and Penn National jocks mixed in with the Leroy Moyers and Rudy Turcotte jockey types from the Maryland circuit? I loved Timonium and those 4 and a half, 6 and a half furlong races. A horse named Red Lamp shipped in from CT and won me a wad of cash one weekend. Wow, those were the days!
