The following has personally led to yours trully being LESS of a true diehard fan(not in order necessarily).

1. AGE

I think so to a degree...

I think part of it is getting older and the modern era of players and teams not staying the same place for very long, not nearly as many diehard fans these days.

Excellent point!

Actually, probably more, but per capita MUCH less in my opinion.

I personally believe sports has single handidly jacked the prices of almost everything we buy...the higher the salary, the higher the advertising, it never ends.

Sports and advertising and TV make the world go round.

I'd say Yes, it has made me less of a true fan. And I'm a lot smarter for it!

On the other hand, though I am less of a true fan of my teams, I am more of a true fan of the game, be it football, basketball, baseball, or hockey

i'm still a diehard sports fan, but not from a team rooting standpoint. i'm a fan of the GAME, whatever game it is. I can't stand today's athletes, - spoiled,

the self promotion, etc. not sure if its all the media exposure today or is it that they are less caring of the fans than the athletes from when i was a kid in the 70's. Want my autograph? it'll cost you $25. the sad part is I have a little boy who is starting to really show a lot of interest in sports, and i know it is not like it was in the past, and that is sad to today's kids

Come on JC..You're too young for Objectivity.

Or is law school honing you down?

Tell me you didn't feel a Special Warm Feeling when The Greatness punked the Skins in their own crib today.

As for me, I take a local interest in Bolts since I've watched them live from the Dog Days all the way through last season's Cup. But otherwise have abandoned all undue allegiance for Cowboys, Rangers which was part of my first 37 years in Dallas.

Not for the team that I am a die-hard for. Illini basketball will always have a stranglehold grip around my heart. Illini football, well I am a fan, but they always suck, so I bet against them in certain spots. The Cardinals, well, I don't bet much baseball, but I would bet against them if I thought it was a very good bet.....but only in a meaningless regular season game. I occasionally bet against the Illini in basketball, if the line is inflated. But at those times, I could care less about my wager, and they usually win the game anyway, but might not necessarily cover. Or I will bet on them in the regular season, but almost always on the ML, so I don't have to worry about them covering, just winning the game. But I would never bet on the game when it's the tournament. Being a fan of Illini basketball will always be way more important to me than winning a wager.

Betting makes you more likely to admit if your favorite team sucks. A lot of being a diehard fan, for some people, is thinking your team is the best even if they are trotting Latroy Hawkins out in the 9th inning to close games:drink:

I'm still a diehard fan of my teams, but I also tend to look at them objectively. I'll be the first stand and cheer, or stand and bitch. I also think gambling sometimes makes you a fan of teams you normally have no interest in. This season I won on Northwestern several times, including when they beat Iowa, so I've been a big Wildcat fan. But overall, I agree, gambling tends to waterdown your allegence to your favorite teams.

The worst part of sportsbetting... You're at the game, rooting for your favorite team to win, AND the visiting dog to cover (but not win). People at Notre Dame look at you funny when you're clapping for Syracuse's TD late in the game as they're down 34-3.
