George finally died an hour ago. Without doubt, the best player I ever seen, highlight film only tells half the story, the man was a true wizard.:suomi:

Yes the "5th Beatle" passes. I saw him play briefly for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers way past his prime.

The tragedy of his life is that neither he nor we ever saw just how good he really could have been.

Was aware of his legend status but was regretfully unable to see him during his prime. Their is a price to pay when living in the so called fast lane and Georgie paid it. Only saw Pele at the end of his fabled career as well. Soccer as a major sport, to this day, still hasn't made significant inroads in U.S.A.

Did you see Steve Zungul or Stan Stamenkovic play by any chance?

Journey,

I really thought in the mid 70's the product put on the pitch by the NASL was excellent.Spent many day or night on the sidelines during Tampa Bay Rowdie games. Team was made up of many 1st Division English players including Rodney Marsh [current equivalent of the Premiership] who maybe were only a step off their prime. Sometimes drew crowds in excess of 40,000. The game was easy to love.

The MLS does very little for me however. The business model needs to include more international star players. The North American game is dull.

No Journeyman, I have not seen either of these players (at least not to my knowledge), I've gotten away from soccer but do catch a few weekday games on ESPN. I'm dating myself, but I did see the great Stanley Mathews as a youngster back in the 50's. I'm a convert to the NFL, MLB and moreso college foots and hoops.
