Texas A&M, the state’s first public institution of higher education, was opened on Oct. 4, 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. The school owes its origin to the Morrill Act of 1862, which established the nation’s land-grant college system.

Every A&M school stands for Agriculture and Mechanical as mentioned above. Several universities used to have the A&M but dropped it to update their image. Oklahoma State used to be Oklahoma A&M and there are several others.....leave it to Texas A&M to stick with their name come hell or high water. They did a good job, today, by the way. tulsa
