I've got a guy who insists that there is a way to score 1 point in football, besides kicking an extra point?

I can't think of any situations, but before I bet him I want to be sure.

Any rules guru's know something I don't?

Thanks,
Mac

Rouge point in CFL? Isn't that one point?
Thats it
Single Point or Rouge
If the ball is kicked into the goal area by an opponent, a rouge is scored (1) when the ball becomes dead in possession of a team in its own goal area or (2) when the ball touches or crosses the deadline, or a side-line-in-goal, and touches the ground, a player, or some object beyond these lines.
AR Team A kicks to Team B. B1 attempting to catch the ball on Team B 3 yard line, fumbles it and is tackled with the ball in possession in the Team B goal area. Ruling - rouge (ball deemed to have been kicked into goal area by Team A).
AR Team A kicks to Team B. B1 catches the ball in the field of play while moving towards own goal line and, in the judgment of the official, the momentum carries B1 into own goal area. Ruling - possession deemed to have been gained in the goal area.
After a rouge the team scored against shall next put the ball into play by a scrimmage as first down at any point between the hash marks on its 35-yard line.
If the single point was scored as the result of an unsuccessful field goal attempt the team scored against may elect to scrimmage the ball at any point between the hash marks on its own 35 yard line or at the previous line of scrimmage.
Note: For the purposes of this Article a drop kick or place kick shall, without exception, be deemed to be a field goal attempt.
Note: If during a kickoff the kicked ball proceeds through the goal area and across the deadline or sideline in goal without being touched there shall be no score and the ball shall be awarded to the receiving team at any point between the hash marks on its own 25-yard line.

If you line up for the extra point, and the holder gets up and runs the other way to the opposing goal line and crosses it, you've got an extra point.

This happend earlier this year...If you're going for two points and the ball gets picked off, the defender tries to run it out then somehow gets tackled back in the endzone, it is one point.

Very good stuckinvegas

Has this ever happen?

NFL Digest of Rules

Try

1. After a touchdown, the scoring team is allowed a try during one scrimmage down. The ball may be spotted anywhere between the inbounds lines, two or more yards from the goal line. The successful conversion counts one point by kick; two points for a successful conversion by touchdown; or one point for a safety.

JM in college football that can happen but not in the NFL

2. The defensive team never can score on a try. As soon as defense gets possession or the kick is blocked or a touchdown is not scored, the try is over.

3. Any distance penalty for fouls committed by the defense that prevent the try from being attempted can be enforced on the succeeding try or succeeding kickoff. Any foul committed on a successful try will result in a distance penalty being assessed on the ensuing kickoff. 4. Only the fumbling player can recover and advance a fumble during a try.

Has it ever happen in NFL history, Im sure if it did we would see it every now and then like Jim Marshall running the wrong way.

The place holder would have to run 90 yards the wrong way for the defense to earn the point.

But it is a good trivia question

Another weird rule that you think you could actually see is the free kick after a Fair catch rule with no time remaining in the half or the game.

If a player fair catches a punt and no time is left in the half or game the team whos player made the fair catch can have their kicker try a field goal from the spot of the fair catch only the kicker and holder will be on the field for the attempt.

You think there might be a situation once every 2 years or so where a teams punter is kicking from his own end zone with 6-7 seconds left in the half or game and he hits a bad punt that a team could fair catch with no time left and try the free kick.

But I cant remember the last time one was attempted.

Tennessee Titans vs. Texans game - this season. Titans kicked to end the first half, missed.

Bears were in midst of magical run in early 70s, maybe 1969, where they won 3-4 games consecutively in 4th qtr. One victory was Max Percival kicking game winning FG at gun via free kick from 40 something yards after a fair catch. The goal posts were still on goal line when this occurred. Since posts moved to endline(why are they still called goal posts?), the free kick has been rendered useless.

If I'm not mistaken, it can be done at any time during the game not just with no time left on the clock. It's just that it would not be very smart to try it in the middle of say the third quarter.
