Wow I mean aside from all the times he is serving up game winner home runs to David Ortiz he is a good pitcher but 9 million a year over 5 years that is over paying a guy to come to Canada. Guess that means A.J is a longshot. Speaking of longshot's ESPN insider in there baseball section under the rumor section where it list's the Blue Jays as going after Overbay. If anyone has access and can post it up here thanks alot.

NEW YORK -- B.J. Ryan and the Toronto Blue Jays have reached a preliminary agreement on a $47 million, five-year contract, a high-ranking baseball official said Friday.

Ryan, a left-hander who turns 30 next month, is getting the largest deal given to a reliever, topping the $39.99 million, four-year contract Mariano Rivera had with the New York Yankees from 2001-04. Rivera just completed the first season of a $21 million, two-year deal with the Yankees.

The baseball official spoke on condition of anonymity because Toronto had not yet announced the agreement.

"We're still talking to him," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "To me, this whole thing is premature."

Ricciardi said he did not anticipate any announcements during the weekend. Pat Rooney, the head of the Chicago office of Ryan's agent group, declined comment. Rooney's partner, John Courtright, is negotiating the deal.

Ryan's agreement with Toronto was first reported by the New York Daily News on its Web site.

He had 36 saves in 41 chances last season for the Baltimore Orioles and went 1-4 with a 2.43 ERA, striking out 100 in 70 1-3 innings. He had a $2.6 million base salary, earned $200,000 in performance bonuses based on games finished and $25,000 for making the AL All-Star team.

After he became a free agent, the New York Yankees inquired whether he would want to become Rivera's setup man, but Ryan chose to remain in the closer's role.

Ryan's contract might have repercussions on Billy Wagner's negotiations with Philadelphia and the New York Mets. Wagner earned $33 million over four years in a contract he agreed to with Houston before the 2002 season.

The New York Mets have offered just over $30 million for three years, a deal that contains a 2009 option that could raise the value to $40 million. The Phillies also are trying to re-sign him

Here is the ESPN Insider report on Tor interest in Overbay:

Jays pursuing Overbay
Nov 25 - According to the Toronto Sun, the Blue Jays are trying to acquire first baseman Lyle Overbay from the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers reportedly asked for right-hander Dustin McGowan, a former No. 1 pick, in exchange for Overbay, 28, who hit .276 with 19 home runs and 72 RBI in 2005. Toronto declined a deal for McGowan, 23, who apperaed in 13 games for the Jays last season, and finished with 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in seven starts.

Dealing Overbay would free up Milwaukee's first-base job for hot prospect Prince Fielder.

5 guaranteed years for this guy at age 30, with one season of experience as a closer? What a joke. As a Cubs fan, I have to feel like Ryan Dempster is quite a bargain. Equivalent stats to Ryan, two years younger, just signed 3-year extension at $5M per year. Toronto will be trying desperately to dump this guy in a couple years.

This is madness. Investing 40 millions in a reliever is absolute lunacy.

Especially when the closer they had did a great job...the money could have been much better spent on their numerous other needs.

Batista did far from a great job. Bullpen needs some work. Ryan is a good addition but this price is far too high.

Well atleast Toronto is spending some money again, this team has a lot of good young players....this is a strange organization, but this is baseball in 2005 teams just can't build without budgeting, well most anyway.

I shouldn't have said "great", but he was definitely decent. They have other areas that need an upgrade far more and for that kind of money, they should be adding players to fill holes.

Batista saved 79.4% of his save opportunities (31 saves/8 blown). Far from great...but not a total meltdown.

First off thank you Chuck for posting that. As for Batista he is alright but walks way too many guys up there for a closer and isn't a strikeout pitcher not a good mix besides he'll be traded before the season since he wasn't the most well liked guy in the clubhouse. I like Ryan he is an upgrade but I wasn't expecting him to come at that price. However it is good that the Jays are spending money again with the increase in TV money from MLB coupled with the fact that the Blue Jays finally own Skydome (Rogers Centre now) and the Canadian dollar catching up to the American dollar makes it able for the Jays to spend again.

Ryan has some filthy stuff...and keep in mind that the Jays have to overpay to get players to come there. Now that other free agents see that they're willing to spend $ and want to contend, they'll be able to sign premiere players and get right back in the thick of things. They already have a good young nucleus...

Ryan will be good for them. If they get Burnett as well, they'll mix it up in the AL East this year.

And now they can move Batista back to the starting rotation, where they need him most.

if Ryan is worth 47M how much is T.Hoffman worth as a closer

Hoffman would be worth the same as Wagner would be getting since he isn't in his prime so that hurts him.
