According to a report on the Baltimore Sun's Web site on Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox's free-agent first baseman rejected the Orioles' latest offer, a five-year, $65 millon deal.

Worse yet, these offers are usually sitting there waiting for them in the event that they can't find more somewhere else.

The worst part is they turn them down because they need to find someone so desperate that they will guarantee payment on a couple extra years when the guy is likely to be going downhill fast. The perfect example was Kevin Brown. Everyone knew he had maybe 5 years left in that arm, but his agent insisted he get 7 years so he could get paid while he sucked pitching until he was 40. Sure enough, worked like a charm, didn't have to settle just for 5 good years and plenty of money to last many family lifetimes. Getting 15 mil a year to get shellacked everytime he was needed in a big game as the contract end couldn't come soon enough for the Skanks.
