1992-93 Houston Oilers
Up 35-3 at halftime against the Buffalo Bills in an AFC wild-card game, the Oilers managed to turn backup Bills quarterback Frank Reich into a one-day folk hero by losing 41-38 in OT, the biggest in-game turnaround in NFL history. This was particularly painful, since the Oilers never made the Super Bowl during their years in Houston.
The 1993-1994 version of the Houston Oilers was definitely a "should'a been." It seemed poetic justice that our boys from the Oilpatch were a team on the ropes, with no chance of winning their division, much less home field advantage for a divisional playoff game. They had to pull together, show some heart and guts and fight their way out of a huge (read: gaping) hole.
Finding themselves at 1-4 after the NFL's fifth week, the Houston Oilers had to find a way to win. It was time to sink or swim. Put up or shut up. After all, Houston was supposed to be Super Bowl-bound "or else..." according to owner Bud Adams. Every week was now a must-win situation with no room for error. Perhaps they could swipe yet another AFC wild-card playoff spot. How would the Oilers respond to their dilemma? For 11 straight weeks, they did not lose a football game. They swept their division arch-rival Pittsburgh Steelers for the first time since dinosaurs roamed the earth. They won their second-ever AFC Central crown by going 6-0 in division play. They even beat the San Francisco 49ers in Candlestick Park, a feat even Moses might have had trouble accomplishing.
