A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, charged with regulating America's sports industry, announced Friday it will conduct a hearing on the BCS next week, after this season's bowl matchups are determined.

"College football is not just an exhilarating sport, but a billion-dollar business that Congress cannot ignore," said committee Chairman Joe Barton, a Texas Republican. Barton's panel is separate from the House Government Reform panel that tackled steroids in baseball.

The committee announcement called the hearing, scheduled for next Wednesday, a "comprehensive review" of the BCS and postseason college football.

"Too often college football ends in sniping and controversy, rather than winners and losers," Barton said. "The current system of determining who's No. 1 appears deeply flawed

Nice to see Congress has so much free time on its hands since they aren't doing anything about Iraq or the fact Haliburton is "F'ing" the government over for billions of extra $$$ yet these fatcat senile geezeers don't care about that

Congress should spend more time cleaning its own house than trying to do someone else's. ONLY Congress can spend $600 for a hammer one could normally get for $5 and consider it a "great deal"

well there are Congressmen from the non-BCS states who get orgasms when they hear about $14.5 million payouts to the schools

Congress must be feeling its oats after knocking baseball around.

I'm sure some of them were snickering behind the scenes at Raffy getting caught with a needle in his ass and Little Mac deflecting any and all questions ...why not tackle the NCAA?

I was the first one to bash Congress when it got itself involved in MLB drug testing and believed that they had no right getting involved. But they actually were the only group that could get anything done, it took them several months but they get a REAL drug testing policy in baseball now. We all know that the BCS is flawed, not because #1 and #2 dont always play each other (Auburn last year and USC the previous year) but because there is $30 million up for grabs for two teams, the two at large bids. If they can get a better system where the bids are not based on winning your conference but on how you rank, then more power to them. There is alot of money that is going to schools and conferences because of back room deals and not due to who deserves them. The bowls have lost their luster, its time to get a better system. If Congress can do that, then we will all be better off.

Texas Will play USC

I think Barton is either smoking crack or wants a cut of the money

He sure picked the wrong year to make that kind of a statement

I have a strong opinion here about why we see this. It's simple DOLLARS BIG $$$$. By that I'm talking about contributors that give money to their Universitiy's of graduation. They want to see "their" team go to such and such bowl--higher rankings, etc.....WHICH will in Turn bring MORE revenue dollars.

Just follow the money whenever in doubt of why anything happens in the good old USA!

I think that's a big part of the reason that Senator Kyl, never gets his bill passed. Yep...they will pay "lip service" to wanting to stop sports gambling, keeps the right wing happy. At the same time some indulge in the pleasure. After all--they are risk takers just getting into office, being elected, etc.
We have the absolute most "two-faced" government in the world. Imagine that most were/are lawyers.......What a surprise.
