Depending on the offense they ran but I'd guess 22-25 points a game.

Also there was no 3 point shot when he played, you could easily add 5-6 points per game to his average.

I doubt he would score as much with the defenders today though.

The guy was also one of the greatest ballhandlers and passers the college game has ever seen .... If you have never had the privilege track down some video of this guy as it was fantastic

personally, i hate ball hogs, i don't recall his TEAM doing much of anything too special when he played, so his stats, while they may be great, are all about him and not about what was really important, team results.

So difficult to compare eras. True, the 3-point shot was not in effect, but then again, players are quicker and more physical today and that tends to lead to lower scoring games, even with the shot clock. Pete also did not flourish in the N.B.A., which leads me to believe Pete was the only game in town for L.S.U. and basically had to shoot about everytime he got the ball. And I don't think the L.S.U. teams he played on were top notch teams. Still love the guy, but when watching films, the lack of speed all around stands out.

Growing up..for me it was the 2 M"s..in NY it was Maris and Mantle...for me it was Mantle and Maravich..I saw him in the Garden against Princeton..They held him to 40 the first 1/2..Just kidding..actually they did play him quite well that night..There was a game where Issel had 63 and Pistol had 54..One night in new Orleans I believe in 1977..the Knicks threw everything at him except Holtzman and he had 70..His biography is quite compelling..he sufferred from depression, it was hereditary..Great athlete who changed the way ballhandling skills are taught today..

It would be great to see him play in this era. I am one of the firm believers that he would have a much more difficult time getting his shot off against bigger, faster, stronger, quicker opponents.

The basic fundamentals have gotten much worse over time...but athleticism has increased so drastically it is unreal. I would love to see a guy like that who can knock down a high percentage of his shots if left open. There aren't many great shooters left.

Maravich was one one of a kind. Could do everything. Never had a surrounding cast. Pete would also be more athletic with today's training, equipment, and coaching. Back in the day nobody lifted weights after a 48 minute game, they went out and smoked cigarettes and tipped tall boys until the next day's game.

they might have held him to 40 per game.
He actually was a better passer than shooter and he was one of the greatest shooter in the history of bb.
He also had a great pro career.

He would have a hard time getting into the paint against today's defenders. There were a lot more stiffs back in the day. The athleticism today would be able to keep him in front of them.

Pete did not flourish in the NBA? HUH? From Pete's NBA stats site...

Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1987); All-NBA First Team (1976, '77); All-NBA Second Team (1973, '78); All-Rookie Team (1971); Five-time NBA All-Star; One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).

And he averaged over 24 points per game. But his real impact was in college...I too remember the 3 M's cover with Pete, Mount, and Murphy. I was at Ohio State then and we had Alan Hornyak, who was a pretty good shooting guard himself. I wonder whatever happened to him?
