I get abused by Hawk fans about how great their fans are and how good they travel. I don't disagree. There's more of them in the state and they do travel good. Tell me why then is Hilton Coliseum such a better home court than Carver Hawkeye. With their fan base they should have better fans in their basketball arena. And it's not even that great when they have a good team. My personal opinion and I almost hate to admit is- Iowa fans generally have more white collar, high income people and ISU fans have more blue collar, middle income people. Those high society types have a tendency to sit on their hands.

Think more than anything it is the arenas themselves.

If you recall, the old Fieldhouse in Iowa City was as loud as any arena in the country.

Hilton Coliseum is 3-1 over Carver for atmospheric conditions.

I am not fishhead or hawkeye. But I live in Iowa, I am an Iowa State student, but a Hawkeye at heart.

The whole argument of Iowa traveling better pertains to football. ISU clearly has the better fans when it comes to basketball. Hilton Magic is a special thing and something I wish Carver could attain. Not real sure why the Hawkeye fans dont come out and are as excited for Hawkeye hoops as they are for football. Something that really doesnt make sense to me.

Carver used to be a great venue, sold out every game...think a lot of people don't like Alford...they still are in top 20 in attendence every year however.

As mentioned earlier, have never had the same devotion for IOWA basketball since the demise of the old Fieldhouse.

That place was awesome!

This could very well be part of the reason. Wasnt around for the Old Fieldhouse days. Carver doesnt seem to hold sound as well. I have been to each of the last 3 ISU-Iowa matchups. All the home teams have won. Carver seemed dead in their victory over ISU, while Hilton was jumping. Not sure how much of that can be attested to atmospheric conditions.

You're right. The Fieldhouse was really loud. And I always got drunk there and a few times found somebody to get cozy with after leaving.:toast:

Never forget it, HAWKEYE171 and myself were there for the last game ever at the old Fieldhouse..................and saw the GOPHERS win a dramatic triple overtime game in what was a trully classic affair.

Believe KEVIN McHale was on that Gopher team if I am not mistaken.

Oh!

The last visit to the Fieldhouse(bar) was kicked out.

Some Iowa wrestler came into the bar and started shouting "HEY HEY HEY" real loud........so I stood up and said "WHAT WHAT WHAT?

He comes over to our table and asked was there a problem and the couple s we were with and my girlfriend promptly said "no". He then says "good, lets keep it that way". Then I stick out my hand and said "thanks for coming over and sharing your words of widsom".........which prompted him to shove me back over on my chair headfirst

Got up and he goes for a double leg takedown on me and I pick him up and pile drive him into the floor...........then all hell broke lose.

Again, that was my last visit there.

Oh, also 0-105 picking up women there.................not a good ballpark for me overall.

Oh, we used to have some great times at the old Fieldhouse (the arena). Fish and I also attended the final home game for former Hawkeye great Ronnie Lester. I believe the Hawks beat Illinois. Iowa then went on to the Final Four that season, losing to Louisville in the semi-finals. As far as Carver-Hawkeye goes, it doesn't compare to Hilton. Cy1981 may have hit the nail on the head, the fans with the best seats tend to be wealthier and sit on their hands. Plus it's no secret Alford is not liked and that may play a part in the lack of atmosphere.
