If a team wins in OT or Shootout it goes in regular win column if they lose goes in the OTL column.

Needs to work both ways if you have a OTL column you need OTW column
or count the wins as a win and a loss as a loss and in ( ) have OTL losses

.............. GP W L (OTL) Pts.
Team A.... 34.17 17 ( 5) 39

Right now they get a record of

............ GP W L OTL Pts.
Team A.. 34 17 12 5 39

makes them look like a team 5 games over .500

I agree there needs to be more clarity. It was just as bad before the shootout was implemented, when the line would have 4 digits. In '03, this was Tampa's record:

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 width="98%" border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#e1d8b9><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH>TAMPA BAY</TD><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH align=right>82</TD><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH align=right>36</TD><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH align=right>25</TD><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH align=right>16</TD><TD class=HEADLINEGRAPH align=right>5</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
What casual fan could figure out what that means, the 35-25-16-5? By the way, the '5' means OT losses, which would be more significant if they indicated OT wins too. Same problem as this year with shootouts.

On an semi-related note, did you see that Mario pulled out of the Olympics with an irregular heartbeat? That sucks for Team Canada fans.

Yep seen it on the ESPN crawler about Mario.... standings would be hard for a casual fan to understand at a time when they looking to improve the game.

It's just done that way so we can easily account for the Points.

I'm less distracted by OT losses as I am by SO losses.

An OT loss or win is simply one team beating another in a 65 minute game.

A SO loss or win is simply one team or another getting Lucky or Unlucky, in my opinion.

Thus, in my personal capping I'm still counting SO losses and wins as TIES.

I'll be posting a summary of NHL standings for past 20games later this weekend and it will reflect this personal inhouse ranking.
