I use my laptop in the home while on my laptop. I am constantly going through periods of no connectivity. They seem to happen about every 10 minutes.....lasting 30 to 60 seconds. I just lose my connection for no known reason. Nothing worse then getting dealt pocket aces without being able to play your hand.

Anybody know why this might be? Should I change a setting on my router? I know it isn't my computer because I don't have this problem in other wireless areas.

Thanks in advance!

what's your router? I use a linksys, and never have connectivity problems. My router is downstairs and I use my laptop upstairs. I don't know...........maybe your router, just a thought.

Not every time, but sometimes things went blank when someone answered the cordless phone. I just got a new phone (because I drove over the other one--nothing to do with this problem) and haven't noticed an issue.

I don't squat about wireless, but my neighbor who does--and helped me set up mine--told me to spend the extra couple a bucks and get a Linksys router. Haven't had a problem.

Router is very close to the tv room where I use the laptop so it shouldn't be a proximity issue.

I just went to the D-Link site and downloaded the latest firmware. Hopefully that helps.

Strange problem, but interference could defintely be the issue. You should have an icon in your "systray" (bottom right) where you can check the signal strength. Once you can see that, a little cause & effect testing should tell you what's up.

If you have an option, try disabling the Windows control of your wireless card

For instance, I have a Dell laptop with an Intel wireless card (built-in) and it has an INTEL program for setting the wireless settings, creating wireless profiles and generally controlling your wireless access

When I let Windows control the wireless I get the same problem as you quite often, but if I disable Windows wireless and let the Intel program do it, I never get it.

so try that

Thanks for the responses. Ttinco - signal strength always says excellent...even when I can't connect oddly enough.

So far since I installed the firmware I have had no problems (knock on wood).

ck - will look into that. thanks.

Also, these wireless routers do go bad. They are pretty basic, but also extremely cheaply made.

Actually, they are junk-but they "usually" work.

to add to TT, he is dead right, but as with anything, there are shitty routers and slightly better made routers...you can actually usually tell by price

One poster mentioned a cordless phone. I went throught hell trying to diagnose a similar problem and it turned out to be one of the phones in the house. Check all your cordless devices. The trouble may even be a neighbor's phone...

You can find cheap ones all the time. Tons of rebates out there. You can find a very good one for 100 bones.

You can get one for $50-60 at CDW (just do a search for "wireless router).

If the wireless part is integrated into your cable modem, I'd go that route first. I'm almost certain that you could whine a replacement out of them.

So does the firmware fix it?? I have a dlink di-524 and it does the exact same thing yours does.

that is what i was told. but if staples has a top of the line i do not mind spending some out of pocket money.. any advantage getting a top of the line router, compared to the basic from cablevision

It seems to have helped. I have the same router. Go here: http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=316&sec=0#firmware

I did have one instance of no connectivity but it has been better since I installed it.

If it keeps acting up I will just buy a new router, but shell out a few more bucks this time.
