these are articles taken from newspapers around the country and posted at benmaller.com. also from kfl.

The Mariners probably have sent feelers out regarding Adam Dunn, but as general manager Bill Bavasi was saying in Dallas, trades for premier talent like that are difficult because of the organization's lack of surplus. To pull off something like that, the Mariners might have to first trade for surplus with one team, then spin that trade into a deal for a guy like Dunn.

As a possible contingency plan if they lose Johnny Damon, the Red Sox have discussed a deal with the Mariners that would involve Matt Clement going to Seattle and center fielder Jeremy Reed coming to Boston, according to a source with direct knowledge of the discussions. Reed, 24, hit .254 with 3 homers, 45 RBIs, and a .322 on-base percentage last season. The Sox, at last check, had offered Damon four years and $40 million, and during yesterday's press conference announcing Jed Hoyer and Ben Cherington as co-GMs, the team reaffirmed its commitment to bringing him back.

Javier Vazquez, who has piqued the Mets' interest, may be on the verge of getting shipped to the Windy City. A baseball insider suggested the White Sox are the most likely destination for the Diamondbacks pitcher, possibly leading to a trade involving Jon Garland (a free agent after the 2006 season) or Jose Contreras.

The Cubs still need a right fielder. General manager Jim Hendry hasn’t been able to swing a trade — Milton Bradley from the Los Angeles Dodgers seems a dim possibility now — so Hendry may turn to the free-agent market. One name on Hendry’s radar screen is Jacque Jones, who has spent his seven-year career with the Minnesota Twins. Jones made $5 million this year, and Hendry has had recent exploratory talks with Jones’ agents. The Dodgers don’t seem inclined to move Bradley to the Cubs, and multiplayer trades with teams such as Tampa Bay (right fielder Aubrey Huff and shortstop Julio Lugo) and Texas (outfielder Kevin Mench) haven’t taken shape.

Miguel Tejada's future bears watching from a Mets perspective, even if the Mets have no plans to replace Jose Reyes at shortstop. GM Omar Minaya may involve the Mets - at least as a third team - in any discussions about Tejada in the hopes of finding an "outside the box" way to get Manny Ramirez to Shea, a baseball executive suggested last night.

The Mariners (and to a lesser extent, the Tigers) are believed to have interest in Carl Pavano, who signed a four-year deal for just under $40 million last winter. The most likely scenario is that Pavano remains in pinstripes

The Yankees are considering signing the 32-year-old Nomar Garciaparra to play first base. While GM Brian Cashman and agent Arn Tellem refused to confirm or deny an offer has been made by the Yankees to Garciaparra, several industry sources indicated an offer has been made. "I can't say anything, I can't make any comment other than to say a number of teams have expressed interest in a number of possibilities," Tellem said. The Yankees must believe Garciaparra, who made $8.25 million last year, is a good enough athlete to make the transition to first base from short and third, where he played 34 games last year. If they sign Garciaparra, it means Giambi is going to have to deal with mostly being the DH. It also could force Bernie Williams to reconsidering staying with the Yankees.

Todd Helton has a contract through 2011 and a no-trade clause. He has spoken fondly of the young Rockies teammates. More importantly, he spoke up at the end of the season about needing some experience in the bullpen, and the Rockies have added that by re-signing Mike DeJean, trading for Ray King and signing Jose Mesa. If the Rockies make forward steps, Helton will remain happy. His contract allows him to opt for free agency after 2007 (a decision he'd have to make by Nov. 15, 2006), but that would involve walking away from $68.9 million in base salary. You never dismiss the possibility, but it would take Helton losing faith for a trade to happen. Then, as long as there is so much money due Helton, teams will have to be willing to handle a complicated transaction, a la Mike Hampton going from Colorado to Florida to Atlanta, with everyone contributing along the way.

The name circulating as Tom Gordon’s set-up reliever is former Marlins and Mets closer Braden Looper. Looper’s reputation is that of a guy with a gifted arm whose inconsistency made him a late-inning headache for his former employers. The Phillies have caused many of Looper’s problems. Although he has a 3.57 ERA for his career against the Phillies, lifetime he is 2-4 with a 5.34 ERA and has allowed 12 home runs in 571/3 innings. The good news: If Looper signs with the Phillies, there will be one less team out there that pummels him.

I believe it's a very real possibility that the Astros could sign Roger Clemens after May 1, and I believe the two sides will explore that avenue in the future. It makes perfect sense. Last year, Clemens was terrific for five months. Month to month, he posted ERAs of 1.03, 1.54, 1.97, 1.32 and 1.70 through August. His ERA was 4.33 in September and 5.63 in October. So if he started pitching in June, he'd have four months of the regular season and one month of the postseason, should the Astros get that far.

What cities are the Marlins considering moving to? Trips to Portland, Ore., northern New Jersey and Las Vegas are expected, and there are rumblings about Nashville and Charlotte. San Antonio is definitely a serious contender, for a number of reasons that have already been reported. First off, the market is growing, and there is strong local support to bring in another major professional sport to join the Spurs of the NBA. A plus for San Antonio is the climate, which is such that a retractable roof wouldn't necessarily be needed. So the cost of a building a stadium there wouldn't be as high as some other places.

General manager Jon Daniels said the Vincente Padilla trade does not preclude the Rangers from making another move, whether via a trade or free agency. The Rangers have had conversations with pitchers across the board, from low-risk Sidney Ponson to the high-dollar clients of Scott Boras.

Royals general manager Allard Baird has long coveted Kevin Mench, but the clubs haven't been able to match up. The Rangers would love to have right-hander Zack Greinke, but the Royals balk at that notion. They'll offer injury-plagued but talented lefty Jeremy Affeldt, or hard-throwing but wild closer Mike MacDougal. That doesn't do it for the Rangers. Unless somebody bends or other players are thrown into the equation, there doesn't seem to be a fit.

Without any legitimate closers remaining on the free agent market, the Braves will likely find one on the trade market. There have been reports that they have talked about acquiring Toronto's Miguel Batista or Tampa Bay's Danys Baez. But neither would provide the confidence necessary for the Braves to be willing to include their top prospects in the deal. The Braves are continuing to weigh their limited options in regards to closer and know they already have Chris Reitsma to fill that role if necessary. Given his first chance to go to camp with the plan to be a closer might provide Reitsma the confidence he needs to be just as effective as he was this past June and July, when he proved to be a capable closer for the Braves.

The overwhelming consensus around baseball is that Nomar Garciaparra is no longer capable of playing the shortstop position. But that doesn't mean the Braves have ruled out the possibility of having him on their roster. Garciaparra doesn't have the power he once possessed and his recent health troubles are a concern. But this a 32-year-old man with a career .320 batting average. Thus, he's proven he can certainly hit at the Major League level and at the right price might be worth a gamble. While Garciaparra wouldn't be as strong defensively as Ryan Langerhans in left field, he'd likely be a much greater offensive threat who could be very productive if placed between Andruw Jones and Jeff Francoeur in the lineup.

Mariners sources say they can be expected to announce later this week they have reached agreement with outfielder/designated hitter Carl Everett on a contract for either one year, or one year plus a club option for 2007. The contract was said to be unfinished Monday night, pending several matters, including successful completion of a team physical. Larry Reynolds, Everett's agent, declined to confirm the near settlement Monday night, saying, "Nothing's done yet." However, the sides reportedly have finalized most financial issues, with Everett seemingly to make between $3 million and $3.5 million in 2006.

As for filling their significant pitching needs, the Mariners have talked with agent Scott Boras about right-hander Kevin Millwood and left-hander Jarrod Washburn, but it seems unlikely they will meet Boras' expectations of five years for Millwood or three or four years for Washburn. As one scout said of Washburn, "He's had those forearm problems and they often seem to lead to elbow trouble." Sources say Seattle may take another gander on right-hander Scott Elarton, who was 11-9 for Cleveland, with a 4.61 earned-run average. Millwood was 9-11 with a league-leading 2.86 ERA for Cleveland.

The Red Sox continue to explore replacements for shortstop Edgar Renteria, who was traded to Atlanta last week for top third base prospect Andy Marte. A trade involving Ramirez for disgruntled Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada appears unlikely at this point, and the Sox are believed to be focused on free agent Alex Gonzalez, formerly of the Florida Marlins.

Jacque Jones' future with the Twins is all but over as his agent confirmed Monday that they intend to reject the team's salary arbitration offer. Dan Lozano said Jones has two multiyear contract offers and expect to get three more soon. It's believed that one offer is from Kansas City for three years and $15 million, but Jones prefers to play on a contender. The Twins have told Lozano they were interested in only a one-year deal if Jones wanted to return. Several teams, including the Royals, Cardinals, Dodgers and Mariners, have expressed interest.

Pat Gillick said the Phillies are deciding between two players to complete the deal and should let the Rangers know in the next week. One is a major-league pitcher - believed to be Ricardo Rodriguez - while the other is a minor-league position player.

Yanks GM Brian Cashman was spotted lunching at a Washington Heights restaurant yesterday with free-agent reliever Julian Tavarez. "I went there and he showed up," Cashman said of the right-hander whom the Yankees have an interest in.

The Red Sox have let Roger Clemens know they would love to have him return to Boston, but team president Larry Lucchino said the decision is up to the future Hall of Famer. “It’s high (interest), but all we’ve done is plant a seed and tell him it would be almost a storybook way to end his career,” Lucchino said. “It’s up to him now.”

The Phils clearly aren't finished yet. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to keep Phillies third baseman David Bell on their radar. The Dodgers would like to sign Bill Mueller to a contract, but if they lose Mueller to the Pittsburgh Pirates or San Francisco Giants, they could rekindle their discussions with the Phillies. The Phils and Dodgers talked at the winter meetings last week about a trade that would have sent Bobby Abreu to Los Angeles for starter Derek Lowe, reliever Duaner Sanchez and two prospects. The teams also discussed a deal for Bell. The Dodgers would like Bell to hold third base for a season while they wait for a top prospect to develop. The Phillies wouldn't mind moving Bell because he's going to make $4.5 million next season. If Bell is dealt, Abraham Nunez would become their everyday third baseman.

The Cardinals have agreed to a two-year contract with lefty reliever Ricardo Rincon, according to his agent. Rincon has held lefthanded hitters to a .208 batting average in his nine-year career, and he'll slide into the void recently left when Ray King was traded to Colorado. An official announcement of the contract - worth $2.9 million over the two years - will follow the physical needed to complete the deal.

Antonio Alfonseca would like to fill the void created by the loss of Hernandez in the Mets' bullpen. "Antonio loves the direction they're going in and they're one of the teams he asked me to contact. I hope in the near future I speak to Omar Minaya about that," agent Juan Iglesias said. The 33-year-old righthander went 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA for the Marlins last season.

The chances of Texas trading Hank Blalock seem even more remote now that Alfonso Soriano is gone from the middle of the lineup. You never say never, but the bottom line is that the Rangers are not looking to move Blalock.

Barry Zito appears to be staying put in Oakland, according to reports out of the Bay Area. The left-hander is one season away from being a free agent, and the Reds would likely have to give the A's way too much to get a guy for what might be just one year of service in Cincinnati.

The Marlins do have a number of prospects they can use to lure in a player like Joey Gathright. Tampa Bay is looking for young pitching, and Florida is suddenly loaded with that. A name floated around for Gathright is lefty Scott Olsen, who picked up his first Major League win by beating Tampa Bay.

If the Nationals want better pitching, Ryan Church most likely will be traded. In fact, he was almost traded to the Diamondbacks for Javier Vazquez last week. I would hate to see Church leave because he has a lot of potential. I think he's capable of hitting 30 home runs and driving in 100 runs in a season.

What's next? Baltimore may also be talking with ex-Oriole Jeff Conine, who had a huge second half for Florida last season. He'd likely fit in at first base or designated hitter. The O's are also looking for one more starting pitcher, which would give Leo Mazzone one more arm to throw into his blender.

There are some big questions about Erubiel Durazo that the Mariners might not feel comfortable with right now. He's coming off Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery that kept him out for most of the 2005 season, and he really doesn't have much value in the field other than the ability to occasionally start at first base. The Mariners would seemingly prefer an outfielder/DH-type who can spell Raul Ibanez in left from time to time. That's not Durazo's game.

The Nomar Garciaparra thing is interesting. The Indians believe he could convert to right field, but that seems easier said than done, because I wonder if Garciaparra would really want to come out of the infield. Nomar's drawn some interest for a few other teams, and I'd have to imagine that if he gets an offer to play in the infield, the Indians would be out of luck. He's got a great bat, but he's obviously fragile, so this would be a risky pickup for the Tribe.

Certainly, trading Javier Vazquez is high up on Josh Byrnes' list of things to do. Once the Diamondbacks see what they get back for him, it will help them determine other moves for the winter. But for me, the biggest challenge facing the front office is what to do about the corner infield/outfield spots. If the season started tomorrow, Shawn Green would be in center, Chad Tracy in right, Conor Jackson at first and Troy Glaus at third. That's just not a very good defensive alignment. Green is not a center fielder, though he gamely has volunteered to continue playing there if necessary, and Tracy, though he works hard at it, is not a right fielder.

With a typical Greg Maddux year, he could move into the Major League all-time top 10 for wins and games started, into 11th for strikeouts, and top 20 in innings pitched. Maddux now has 318 wins. Steve Carlton is 10th with 329. Along the way, Maddux would pass Don Sutton, Nolan Ryan, Eddie Plank and John Clarkson.

The Angels would rather have Chone Figgins start in center field and Dallas McPherson start at third. He will still have to win the job, but if McPherson can demonstrate he's recovered from hip surgery and can withstand the demands of playing every day, he'll be in the lineup. The club still needs to find out if McPherson can hit for consistent power at the Major League level, and they believe that he will, which would be a tremendous boost to a lineup that could desperately use another power bat.

The Angels are indeed considering Juan Rivera for a starting position, but it depends on whether or not they acquire another bat. Despite not landing one at the Winter Meetings, the club has kept open the possibility of acquiring a veteran to fill the DH slot. If that were to happen, Rivera would return to the bench. He also will get competition from within the organization, even if the Angels do not add a veteran bat. Kendry Morales will be given the opportunity to win a spot as well. With Garret Anderson still on the club, Rivera will most likely see more time at DH next season with reserve duty in the outfield, even if he's an everyday player.

Would the Astros consider dealing Adam Everett and signing Nomar Garciaparra? Garciaparra is not a long-term solution at shortstop, and from what I'm hearing, none of the interested clubs have any intention of playing Nomar at that position. That speaks volumes. Garciaparra has said he would be willing to play any position other than pitcher and catcher, but I have a feeling he would need to sign for next to nothing and rely on a contract calling for heavy performance bonuses. I don't believe the Astros are interested, but you never say never.

If Roger Clemens is to return to Houston, there is always the possiblity that son Koby could be a September callup. Don't think that thought has not crossed Roger's mind. Very few father-son combinations have played in the big leagues together -- the Griffeys are the most recent -- and I believe it would be enticing for Roger to pitch an inning with Koby playing third base.

The Pirates are certainly thin at third base now that Mackowiak and Ty Wigginton are no longer with the team. While Hank Blalock would certainly fill that vacancy quite nicely, I am no longer inclined to believe that the Pirates will make a move for him. The Rangers would almost certainly want Oliver Perez included in any deal for Blalock, and Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield is extremely reluctant to part with the hard-throwing southpaw. Free agent Bill Mueller is another third baseman the Pirates have been pursuing this winter, but the former Giant seems to be leaning toward accepting a contract with a West Coast team.

The only untouchables are players who have 10-5 rights (Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio) or no-trade clauses (Andy Pettitte, Lance Berkman). This doesn't mean the Astros wouldn't part with them, it just means that the players control their destiny and I don't see any of the four agreeing to play elsewhere. Everyone else is available, but obviously there are players who the Astros don't want to part with. I believe Roy Oswalt can be added to the list of near-untouchables. I don't believe Brad Lidge falls into that category, although it would take a mind-boggling offer for the Astros to trade him.

Padres GM Kevin Towers is now focusing on pitching. He said reliever Doug Brocail is scheduled for a physical later this week. If Brocail passes, the free-agent right-hander will return to the Padres for a one-year, $1 million contract. The 38-year-old Brocail, who pitched in San Diego from 1992-94, went 5-3 with a 5.52 ERA in 61 games for the Texas Rangers last season.

Word is the Texas Rangers remain adamant that Twins pitcher Scott Baker be included in any potential deal for third baseman Hank Blalock. The Rangers are not interested in acquiring starter Kyle Lohse as part of the deal.

Who Knew? Ben Cherington (Meriden) and Jed Hoyer (Plymouth) join Kansas City's Allard Beard (Rochester), San Francisco's Brian Sabean (Concord), and Baltimore's Mike Flanagan (Manchester) as major league GMs with New Hampshire roots.

Copies of Ryan Sandberg's memorable Hall of Fame speech, which denounced steroid abuse and emphasized the importance of the integrity of the game, will be given to all of the Philadelphia Phillies' minor-league players. Sandberg began his professional career in the Phillies organization before being traded to the Cubs in 1982 along with Larry Bowa in exchange for Ivan DeJesus.

The plan is for Dioner Navarro to start the season at catcher in Los Angeles and Russell Martin to open at Triple-A Las Vegas. Navarro finished up the season doing a respectable job for a rookie in the Major Leagues. He's a line-drive switch-hitter with an average throwing arm and decent running speed. Martin is ranked by Baseball America as the Dodgers' No. 4 prospect. The scouts who like him the most consider him a gamer along the lines of Paul Lo Duca with an exceptional knowledge of the strike zone, but with better defensive mechanics and arm strength than the former Dodgers catcher.

While the Rays would like to see Jorge Cantu improve his defense -- he made nine errors in 76 starts at second base -- he is the Rays' starting second baseman, and it's highly unlikely that he will play any third base in 2006, as the Rays don't want to do anything that might distract Cantu from what he does best, which is swing the bat. Having said that, there are those in the organization who believe that Cantu's ultimate destination is first base -- assuming he continues to grow into his 6-foot-1 frame and that growth is accompanied by even more compelling offensive numbers.

Arizona is "nearing conclusion" of a deal for righty Javier Vazquez, GM Josh Byrnes told The Post, and the Mets spoke to the Diamondbacks as recently as yesterday. Vazquez's arrival at Shea would probably mean Benson's imminent exit, but Minaya hadn't gone to his bosses about a deal as of early last night. St. Louis, Detroit and Washington also have been linked to Vazquez. So have the White Sox, but a Chicago-based source said they have more pressing needs.

As for Johnny Damon, the Yankees continue to like the 32-year-old leadoff hitter/center fielder, but only if agent Scott Boras comes off his demand for a seven-year contract. The Yankees wouldn't be averse to a four-year deal worth between $11 million and $12 million a year.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays assistant general manager Bart Braun was charged with DUI early Sunday morning, according to police reports. He was released around 11:30 a.m. today from Orient County Jail on $500 bond.

The Boston Globe's Chris Snow reports former <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/45/mlb">Boston Red Sox SS Edgar Renteria, now with the Atlanta Braves, believed the Fenway Park infield led to his 30 errors in 2005. ''I worked a lot last year to feel comfortable and just couldn't. It's one of the reasons why I wanted out of Boston," Renteria said.
