Coach Pete Carroll said earlier this week he would not interview for jobs outside of USC this year.

But it turns out there might be some wiggle room in that decision.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Sunday that Carroll's representatives are sending out feelers for NFL jobs that would give the Trojans' coach control of football operations and $6 million a year.

Carroll told ESPN Radio 710 in Los Angeles on Friday that he will not interview for any jobs outside of USC, with whom he has a chance to win a third consecutive national championship, this year.

Mortensen reported Sunday that the NFL explorations by Carroll's agents might be simply an effort to get Carroll a new contract, one similar to that of Notre Dame's Charlie Weis.

Weis signed a 10-year contract extension believed to be worth approximately $3.5 million per year with the Irish earlier this season, making him the highest paid coach in college football.

In an interview on "The Big Show with Mason and Ireland" Friday, Carroll said:

"I'm going to have the chance to recruit eight or nine first-round draft picks. In the NFL you can get one a year. So we're really excited about the place we are, I'm happy to be here."

ESPN Radio: "Does that mean you're going to pass on the chance to interview for any jobs outside of SC this year?"

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any jobs."

ESPN Radio: "Wow."

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any of them."

The Trojans are 12-0 this season and haven't lost a game since Sept. 27, 2003. Since Oct. 6, 2002, USC is 45-1. In those 45 victories, only five were decided by less than a touchdown.

As a college head coach, Carroll is 54-9 (all at USC).

Carroll was the head coach of the New England Patriots for three seasons (1997-99) and New York Jets for one year (1994).

He guided the Patriots into the playoffs in his first two seasons. Carroll's record as an NFL coach was 33-31.

I would love to see him take the Texans job...I think they could turn things around right away with a new coach. They have been in almost every game. If a different coach was there this season, they are a .500 team at worst.

They need a playmaker in the backfield and a new offensive line...but they could get those needs addressed with their draft pick and through free agency.

I hope he's joking! Carrol would be way in over his head if he re-joined the NFL.......he has it way better than any head coach in the NFL!

Carroll has expressed many times that he enjoys coaching college football more then the NFL. With his success at USC, recruiting should be no problem for as long as he stays. Don't think he wants to go down the Steve Spurrier path. Most likely posturing for a more lucrative contract at USC. At least I hope so. Enjoy seeing the Trojans program once again a college force.

He said he would not "INTERVIEW" for any of the jobs.

He did NOT say he would not ACCEPT a job offer in the NFL - especially under his T&C's.

Seems like he is negotiating for the big $$ with total control and partial ownership.

Don't bother bringing up the NFL rules on "interviewing" minority candidates etc. Just ask Matt Millen how to get around those.

Larry Brown Syndrome?

Not sure why he would leave unless winning this often has become boring (I doubt it) What would be his motivation...3 national titles , does he need a 'new challenge'?

As much as USC has accomplished the past few years, we don't hear much about Carroll out this way , is he not getting enough credit? How many coaches anywhere have won 3 titles ever, let alone 3 straight?

There were rumors going around new Vikings owner was going to make Carroll a big offer when Vikings started 2-5.....But now they have won 6 straight and air head Tice could be back in minny next season....Carroll was given his first NFL coaching job by Bud Grant so there is a connection.

Petey just getting into better position for contract talk, and more money thats all. I really dont think he would go back to the NFL, but i guess if the money is right, or large enough he would. Maybe 5 million a year, might do it!

I just saw an interview with him last night or the night before....can't even remember if it was ESPN, FSN West, or what channel. He said that he feels that in order to be successful, he needs to run the show from A to Z and that he knows that he will never have that in the NFL. He said that with owners, GM's, etc. there are so many people you have to please that it detracts from football. He said with college, the only people you answer to are the college president and the athletic director, and they have such wide-ranging jobs and so much going on, that they pretty much leave it to you. He said he is REALLY happy where he is at and with the freedom he has.

And at Minny he could do that...Run the whole show

Is that OT from Virginia (Ferguson, I think) as good as I've read? I haven't had a chance to see them play, but keep seeing this guy in the top 4 of just about every mock (with Bush, Leinhardt, Young, and occasionally AJ Hawk).

If they win another national championship ther is NO way he will leave with winning streak still going. IMO. He would be an absolute fool to leave. Just ask Rick Pitino.

He doesn't need leverage or posture. He can walk into Presidents office and he will get Charlie Weiss dough in a second. The university has seen a half billion dollar windfall with the exposure football has brought the university during Carrolls tenure.

Carroll writes his own ticket at USC, period. I don't expect to see him going anywhere. It might be different if the USC cupboard was bare but they are getting committments from the top recruits and the talent is deep.

What would he gain (aside from money which he can get loads of from USC) from taking a job with a shit team like the Lions or Texans?

He's working on a dynasty at USC of potentially historic proportions. NFL success is far shorter lived.

All that is true but can USC offer him the kind of cash long term that an NFL franchise can? Eventually it all comes down to the :money: as we all know...

USC is a private university like Stanford, Notre Dame, etc.

There may be more money from donors and boosters pouring into USC than most other universities.

he'd be crazy to leave usc, as he;s created a dream job. he;s living in a beautiful area in southern california, he's able to recruit nationally, if he
stays and continues at the present pace, he'll go down in history as on of the most successful college coaches.
