i thought it was the best film i've seen all year....

i've spent quite a bit of time in the middle east and once worked as a security advisor for a kuwaiti company, so i took great interest in this film...

although, having lived in the middle east for over a year and half, this film didn't really teach me anything new. i already knew how corrupt the oil biz is (both the american side AND the middle east/central asian side of the business).

if you want to learn more about what the middle east is really like, buy Bob Baer's book (not sure about spelling of last name, i forget exactly)...he's the real-life CIA agent that the film's George Clooney character was inspired by. he wrote a great book about the saudi/american oil interests...very eye-opening.

what didn't you understand about the film? matt damon's kid was electrocuted in the pool and the saudi emir's son (whose house they were at) felt a lot of guilt because of it...

that's why matt damon's company got the contract from the emir's son.

OK I THOUGHT IT WAS AN ACCIDENT BUT HE MADE A COMMENT THAT THE OTHER KID WAS WORTH ANOTHER 100 MILLION.

IF IT WAS AN ACCIDENT WHY WOULD THE GUY MAKE THE COMMENT ABOUT 100 MILLION FOR THE OTHER KID.

MAN WAS I CONFUSED BY THAT COMMENT.

there could have been a million reasons why the screenwriter wrote in that "joke" about "how much for my other son?"

it seemed to me like matt damon's character was just caught by surprise at the emir's son's huge contract offer...

it was obvious that matt damon's character wasn't expecting the offer and it just looked like he made a joke (obviously, in bad taste) regarding his other son to show that he realized he was only getting it because the emir's son felt guilt over the accident...

i loved it.......

i loved how it showed the "smart son" who wanted to reform his country and use the oil revenue to build-up the infrastructure so they'd have something to fall back on once the oil dried up (which is exactly what the royals did in real-life over in the U.A.E. a few years back)....

and the "party boy" son just wanted to buy big yachts and spend all the money and give over-inflated contracts to american oil comapanies to make friends in the west (which is what the other 99% of all the oil-rich arabs do in real-life)...

i thought it was a very accurate portrayal of the middle east and the oil biz...all the way down to the pakistani immigrants who work in the oil fields over there.

well, accurate in just about everything except for maybe all the CIA assassinations :) that was a bit of dramatic license...

but all in all, a great film!

hey, the stuff you're reading in this thread is all the same stuff you'll read in your local paper's movie critic reviews...

i read roger ebert's review the day before i saw the film, and he gave away half the movie!

it doesn't matter though, this movie is still very informative and will be eye-opening for most presently clueless americans....
