Isn't what it is @ USC, but it's not that BAD!
People always want to make it sound as if Carroll was some God-Awful NFL Coach, when in Reality HE WAS NOT!

Any Thoughts on This

he took a Super Bowl Patriots team and drove them right into the ground. Sure Bobby Grier drafted some really bad players, but the veterans tuned Carrolls rah rah stuff out.

from SI.....
The team that went to the 1997 Super Bowl under Parcells declined in each of Carroll's seasons, bottoming out with an 8-8 last-place record when it beat Baltimore 20-3 Sunday after losing six of its previous seven games.
"This is a business of accountability, and two years ago we won the division. Last year we barely made the playoffs and this year we're 8-8," Kraft said. "We need a momentum change."

Most Super Bowl teams go backward in this era of salary cap....look at the last 10 years, how many of these elite teams lost so many key players because they won the Super Bowl?

Dallas, SF, BALTO, STL, all these teams could not afford to pay for the success they achieved, and all went downhill prematurely because of it.

His goofy act won't fly in the pros. Charlie Weiss, one of the few pro coaches in college, handed Carroll's head to him this yr with FAR inferior talent

Yeah, he sure did hand him his head - AT HOME - last time I checked, the Irish lost that game.

Heck, Notre Dame lost to Michigan State AT HOME. Guess Charlie didn't coach that game, did he?

USC was favored by 2 TDs and only won because of lousy officiating and incredible fortune. If Pete Carroll is at ND this yr, they don't go 9-2. If Weiss is at USC, they still win every game and the ones that were close wouldn't have been.

There is no doubt in my mind that Pete deserves credit for what has happened at USC lately. Sure, he's got some great talent, but this guy is a class act and is doing a great job of running the program. I don't look at Weiss and think "this guy is WAY better than Carroll." Give credit where credit is due. Going for their 3rd straight national title. I don't care who the coach is......that's a hell of a job!!! You don't get that done by being incompetent. People make it sound like you could just throw a 3rd grader in there, with USC's talent, and the results would be the same.......that's so far from the truth. The difference between NFL and Div. I coaches (especially the succesful ones) is minimal.....they are the best football coaches in the country. So many "coaches" never make it to the top.....they do well, but only as assistants. These guys are the best at what they do.

I'd be willing to admit that maybe some coaches have a better mind for coaching at the pro level and some are better at coaching college kids. But to imply that Weiss is head and shoulders above someone like Carroll or Spurrier (as another example that didn't have great NFL success) is wrong in my opinion. Look at the the success that Spurrier and Carroll have had in their coaching careers. They didn't get there by coincidence......they got there by competence.

I guess if Coach K at Duke went to the NBA and had 2 or 3 average seasons, he'd be a complete dunce all the sudden. Just disregard his college dominance!

Yawn. I didn't know that failing to cover was "getting your ass handed to you"

The "If Weiss was at whatever and Carroll was at whatever" argument doesn't cut it. Carroll had a program worse that Notre Dame's when he first took over and he made it what it is. It wasn't handed to him.

Now, if he beats Texas, he will have done what NOBODY IN HISTORY (not even your Fat Charlie) has done and that is win 3 National Championships in a row - and we won't even talk about the 4th which he should have had a chance to play in.

Fat Charlie, on the other hand, barely beat Stanford and lost to Michigan State. Fat Charlie has accomplished what 20 other schools have accomplished and that is win 9 games. Pete carroll will do what nobody in history has ever done. 30+ game winning streak vs. 9-2 ... we're not even in the same league.

I stopped using these types of hypothetical arguments when I was in 7th grade. I suggest you do too.
