DIVISION 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Katy (14-0) vs. Southlake Carroll (15-0); Saturday 12/17, Noon, Texas Stadium

No school in Class 5A can match what Katy and Southlake Carroll have accomplished so far this decade. Each has two state championships so far (Katy- '00, '03; Carroll- '02, '04). Katy has four titles overall and Carroll has five. Given the tradition these two programs enjoy, it'd be fitting to call their state championship match-up this weekend a 'Clash of Titans'. The two also met in the 2003 championship and Katy handed Carroll its only loss in class 5A so far in a pulsating one point game (16-15) at the Alamodome. The teams and circumstances change every season, but the tradition each school has built is a gold standard every class is challenged to uphold. These are two programs that expect to be playing December football. Carroll and Katy enter this game with a combined record of 29-0 (one less game for the Tigers due to Hurricane Rita). This is Katy's sixth state championship berth in nine seasons and this is Carroll's fourth consecutive trip to the finals.

Offenses

Katy's offense has set or tied 16 school records (team and individual) so far this season. Senior, and TCU commit, Andy Dalton leads the offense at quarterback. Dalton has 41 TD passes in 227 attempts (TD per 5.5 attempts avg). Senior TB Brandon King and sophomore TB Aundre Dean are the top rushers. The two have combined for just over 2,200 yards and 23 touchdowns. King is the elusive, speed back and Dean is a slasher and slammer. Junior WR Michael Fuda is the top receiver. Fuda has nearly 1,300 yards and 18 TDs. Look for senior all-purpose threat Will Thompson at WR also. Senior Bobby Harris is another fast player on this offense, and is playing well right now. Senior TE Logan Madden and senior FB Jordan Hill help bring this offense to another level. Seniors Cody Lopasky, Joey Welch, Jacob Straka, Ian Aluotto and Bryan Ferris anchor a sound offensive line that averages roughly 275 pounds. Katy averages 413 total yards and 39 ppg.

For Carroll, Senior Greg McElroy and sophomore Tre Newton are the centerpieces of the offense at the QB and RB positions. McElroy has over 4,000 yards passing like Daniel and Wasson before him. Newton has over 1,200 yards. Sophomore QB-WR (and coach's son) Riley Dodge adds versatility to this offense. Senior McKay Jacobsen is the top receiver. Jacobsen is a very good all-around receiver with great speed, great hands, and great technique, and is committed to Brigham Young University. He has 93 catches on the season and 16 TDs. Evan Fentriss is a senior that's stepped up this year. Fentriss is the top deep threat after Jacobsen and Renfro (if he plays). Senior Corbin Smiter is a more possession oriented receiver. Senior Clint Renfro broke his collar bone in the regular season, and has a chance to play in this game. The offensive line is anchored by seniors Michael Prince and Bryce Buford. The Dragons have a powerful offense that averages 530 total yards and 48.7 points per game.

Defenses

Katy's defense is built on speed and quickness to the ball this year. The main area to address following last season was the linebacking corps. All four starters graduated. However, the entire defensive line returned. Seniors DT Will Kirchner, DE Taylor Burkhalter, Will Quintanilla and Ethan Steadman (if healthy) add a lot of experience to this unit. Junior Tyler Mueller is a younger player that has stepped up. Senior MLB Garrett Milner is a team captain who really gets after it and leads by example. Junior Ryan Williams has a nose for the ball and makes plays. Senior OLBs Morris Arnold and John Zwerneman have played very well this year. Arnold rolled down from safety, and adds speed and competitive fire to the defense. Senior defensive backs Will Thompson, Darren Konesheck and Don Bishop are all multi-year starters. Thompson is the most versatile player on the team. Seniors Tosin Agbabiaka and David Sadowski add valuable depth along with talented sophomores Trent Hunter and Terrance Henry. The Tigers allow 216 total yards and 10.6 ppg.

The Dragon offense grabs the headlines, but the defense also deserves credit for how well Carroll has done this year. In fact, one could argue that Carroll's defense is the reason the team is undefeated this year. As a unit, the Carroll defense allows 15.7 points per game. Senior DE Michael Boydston, senior LB Patrick Benoist and senior DB Joseph Agnew are the heart and soul of this defense. All three were elected team captains. Boydston could be the best player on the team overall. He has the most potential as a Division 1-A prospect of anyone on the team if he decides to go that route along with McKay Jacobsen. OLB Justin Padron is one of the few non senior starters on the entire team. Benoist is the best linebacker on the team, and heads up a strong unit. Agnew holds down the back along with Scott Simpson. Both started last year also. Agnew is an all-state contender, and is committed to Tulsa. The defensive line is the best part of this defense overall. Boydston, Adam Powers and Kyle Russo really hold their ground up front and play tough.

Special Teams

If there is a clear weak spot on Carroll's team this year, special teams would have to be it. Place-kicker Kevin Ortega's injury really hurts in the field goal area. Fortunately for the Dragons, none of their games have been decided on the leg of their kicker yet. Neither team punts exceptionally well, and that's probably due to the fact neither team has had to do it very often. The return games are loaded with speed on both sides. Katy has strong kick coverage and block units, and that could be key as far as the field position battle is concerned.

Conclusion

It's tough to ask for a better state championship match-up than this. These are definitely the top two class 5A programs so far this decade, and Texas Stadium should be rocking on Saturday. When these two played in 2003, the game ultimately came down to efficiency and big plays. Katy had no turnovers and also forced an error in the kicking game. The most efficient team will win this game. It sounds overly simplistic, but it almost always does come down to which team makes the fewest mistakes and plays most efficiently. In matchups between teams of this caliber, both teams can effectively score on offense and make stops on defense, so other areas of the game (like special teams, field position, turnover battle) often rise to the forefront.

As far as our pick, we are going to stick with what we said back in May; word for word.

"Carroll is a ridiculous 47-1 (now 62-1) in their three 5A seasons and eventually someone will stop them from reaching the state finals, but until that happens, the road to the state championship runs through Southlake, Texas."

Our Pick- SOUTHLAKE CARROLL
