any team ever fielded in the NFL from about 1984 on up would beat the 72 dolphins. Players get bigger and stronger through the years. The Colts would run about 500 yards they wouldnt even need to pass becuase the line men would have such an overwhelming advantage. Not to mention how fast Edge is compared to anyone the fins have.

Doubt it, these guys today would make many of the Fins look like dwarfs. Biggest guy on the O-line was about 260 and would get bulldozed by guys like Freeney and Triplett. Just hard to compare teams of different eras.

Rob is right, many of those Dolphin guys wouldn't even make the roster of most NFL teams these days. Colts 2nd string would beat them 10 out of 10 times.....

Well obviously you can't bring a 33 yr old team to the future weighing a good 20 % less across the lines and expect anything...unfair to compare that way.

I doubt it.

These guys playing today are mammoths compared to players in 1970s.

In 1970s, many players during offseason had various odd-jobs such as selling vacuum cleaners.

At O-line, D-line and LB, I doubt most from 1970s would make practice squads of todays teams...todays players are just so much larger at these positions.

Larry Czonka, a bruising back of the era, would probably not get out of the backfield, for his blockers averaging at most 270, would not be able to create any push vs todays 300-350 dlineman.

Players surely had more heart and love for the game than todays players, but I doubt they were better athletes.

Today, diet/nutrition, weight training, and overall talent pool is much greater than 1970s.

Relative to their respective eras, past generation players cannot honestly be compared to todays players.

sports illustrated has dolphins as second best team in history

And SI picked San Diego the worst team last year, and the Bears the worst team this year. Somehow I would think the COlts would make the top 5 if they won out. Not sure if they win at Seattle if they are resting players.

Something tells me that the OL play will be better for Indy next week.

Key to beating Indy is to knock Manning around. Sure rushed some throws today. 85 Bears could put on the heat.

Well, place in history is something altogether different and more significant ,and right now the Colts have not accomplished anything compared to the 72 Dolphins...

Anyone remember the Vikings team that went 15-1 and gagged against Atlanta? Didn't think so.

Would also depend what era's rules were in effect. With today's flag football rules, Colts' passing game would go great still. But, if went with pre-1977 rules(all contact with receivers allowed until ball in air and no excess protection on the qb's and receivers) than Colts air game would be seriously derailed. Do you think Marvin Harrison could hold up to the pounding the receivers got from guys like Blount and Willie Brown, etc.?
After all, the rule changes in 1977 were brought about because of the suffocation by the greatest defensive team ever(Steeelers of course) who would beat either of these two at its peak(and theirs).

Old people like to think that their players were so great years ago even though today's players are much bigger, stronger, and faster. Today's athletes are genetically engineered to be super athletes.
