Coco Crisp may have moved a little closer to Boston yesterday, even though he wasn't directly involved in trade talks . . . and neither were the Red Sox.
Baseball sources indicate that the Indians and Braves are closing in on a deal that would send outfielder Ryan Langerhans from Atlanta to Cleveland. And that trade is thought to be a precursor to a subsequent deal that would ship Crisp to Boston.

According to a team source, Kevin Millwood, who led the American League with a 2.86 ERA last season with the Indians, was in Boston last night to meet with manager Terry Francona and other team officials. Millwood, who turns 31 today and represented by Damon's agent, Scott Boras, earned $7 million last season and is believed to be seeking a five-year deal.

Some desperately-needed power should be joining the Blue Jays early next week as Toronto Friday night reached an agreement in principle to aquire Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Troy Glaus. The deal would see second baseman Orlando Hudson and pitcher Miguel Batista dealt to Arizona in exchange for Glaus, 29, a veteran third baseman who clubbed 37 home runs last season and was MVP of the 2002 World Series while playing for the Anaheim Angels. Toronto also gets a prospect in the deal, details of which were still being finalized as of Friday night. The biggest question now surrounding the aquisition will be where he’s going to play, since the Jays already have a third baseman in veteran Corey Koskie and recently traded for first baseman Lyle Overbay.

The Dodgers appear to have replaced the Padres as the most likely landing spot for David Wells, who is insisting on a trade that will put him back on the West Coast. Colletti has done a masterful job of hanging onto the Dodgers' top prospects while adding nearly $70 million in new free agents, including Nomar Garciaparra, Rafael Furcal, and Bill Mueller. But the Sox, who gave up two pitching prospects (Anibal Sánchez and Jesus Delgado) in the Josh Beckett deal, no doubt are asking the Dodgers for young arms such as Edwin Jackson, Jonathan Broxton, and Chad Billingsley or third baseman Andy LaRoche in return for Wells, who turns 43 next May. The other track the Sox could take would be to add another reliever, and with Eric Gagne expected to be healthy again, the Dodgers could dangle either Yhency Brazoban or Duaner Sanchez, with Colletti probably more inclined to part with a setup man than one of his kids.

The Mariners have been talking with agent Joe Urbon about a couple of his free agent clients, first baseman Scott Hatteberg and left-handed pitcher Kazuhisa Ishii, though there's no guarantee the Mariners will land either player. Urbon also represents right-handed reliever Shigetoshi Hasegawa, the longtime Mariner who is now a free agent and looking for a job.

It's surprising both that reports say the Cubs are willing to talk about Mark Prior, not Carlos Zambrano, and that the Baltimore Orioles are more interested in landing Zambrano than Prior. If that's really the case, there's a reasonable chance Hendry and the Orioles' Mike Flanagan will strike a deal that sends Tejada to the Cubs and Zambrano to the Orioles. While Zambrano has been the better, healthier pitcher to this point, it's Prior who still has the potential of being a multiple Cy Young Award winner. He's coming off consecutive disappointing seasons, but that also means less mileage on his arm. He won't be eligible for free agency until after 2008, a year after Zambrano. If the Cubs can work a Zambrano-for-Tejada deal without including their No. 1 prospect, 20-year-old center fielder Felix Pie, they should do it. That might require involving at least one other team to help satisfy the Orioles' asking price.

The latest round of talks with the Padres, according to a source, had GM Kevin Towers reviving his offer of center fielder Dave Roberts and righthander Woody Williams for Wells. But the Sox appear to have little interest in Williams, who is scheduled to earn $5 million next season.

Danny Horwits, agent for first baseman J.T. Snow, said the Red Sox are one of three teams left trying to sign the free agent. The 37-year-old, recognized by many as the best defensive first baseman in the game, could make up his mind shortly after Christmas, said Horwits. With Troy Glaus nearly a Blue Jay, the Sox have apparently returned to their original quest for a left-handed-hitting first baseman. . . .

His signing leaves general manager Brian Sabean two holes to fill, a fifth starter and a backup catcher. The free-agent pickings are slim, although the Giants have considered former Giant Shawn Estes and catcher Todd Greene, among others. Greene is a left-handed hitter who spent the last two seasons in Colorado.

The Red Sox still have interest in Tampa Bay shortstop Julio Lugo, but those talks haven’t progressed far.

As Johnny Damon was still deciding whether to defect to the Yankees, he leaned on some stunning advice from Manny Ramirez, Damon and his wife told The Post yesterday. Before Damon agreed to his four-year, $52 million contract, he spoke by phone to Ramirez for some guidance and the latest information about the Boston left fielder's trade demand. Even though Ramirez still is under contract with the Red Sox, he urged Damon over to the other side of baseball's best rivalry. "Manny said, 'You should go to New York,' " Michelle Damon told The Post.

Who Knew? Only the Dodgers have signed more free agents than the Royals, but two of them played for Los Angeles last season, giving the Royals more fresh free-agent faces than any team in baseball.

The Twins signed lefthanded reliever Dennys Reyes to a minor league contract this week, hoping to fill a hole created when they traded J.C. Romero to the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month. The Twins have yet to announce the deal, but his agent, Oscar Suarez, and a team official confirmed the signing Friday.

Did You Know? San Francisco will be Finley's seventh major-league team. The 2006 Giants will often start three outfielders a combined 121 years old (Barry Bonds, 41, Finley, 41, and Moises Alou, 39).

Devil Rays OF Rocco Baldelli is coming off a lost 2005 after surgeries to his left knee and right elbow. But he said Friday his rehab is going "pretty well" and is looking to be 100 percent when the regular season begins. Having said that, there is no indication the Red Sox have inquired. It is not that Baldelli is off the table (no one is), but teams understand that unless they blow the Rays away, such talk is no use.

The Mets signed Endy Chavez to a one-year, $500,000 contract yesterday to serve as a backup outfielder. Chavez, who was nontendered by the Phillies, drew some interest from the Yankees near the trading deadline last season and will give Mets manager Willie Randolph a speedy bench player who is versatile. He hit .216 with no homers and 11 RBI in 116 at-bats for Washington and Philadelphia last season and was in the Mets' minor league system earlier in his career before being selected by the Royals in the 2000 Rule 5 draft. Chavez is similar to Tike Redman, who was acquired from Pittsburgh earlier this offseason, and likely will compete with him during spring training.

The Pirates reduced their number of salary arbitration players to four Friday when they signed outfielder Jody Gerut to a one-year, $875,000 contract. Gerut, who was acquired July 31 from the Chicago Cubs in the Matt Lawton trade, earned $356,200 last season when he also played for the Cleveland Indians. If healthy this season, Gerut could platoon in right field with Craig Wilson.

The Rangers continued the dance of dialogue with the representative for free-agent pitcher Kevin Millwood on Friday. The thing about modern dance: It's all about interpretation. Currently up for discussion are the exact terms the Rangers have offered Millwood. One source with knowledge of the negotiations indicated the Rangers' offer was for three guaranteed years at a little more than $10 million per year. Another, however, said the Rangers had guaranteed a fourth year that would take the value to more than $40 million. Boras is reportedly seeking a five-year deal for Millwood, who turns 31 today, but there have been no takers.

Former Cards pitcher Pat Hentgen, who pitched with Sidney Ponson in Baltimore, encouraged Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan to take a chance on Ponson.

The Orioles remain in trade talks with several teams about Miguel Tejada, but as of now, no team has matched the club's asking price for the disgruntled All-Star shortstop. According to team and industry sources, the most serious discussions the Orioles are having about Tejada appear to be with the Chicago Cubs, who are dangling a package that includes standout right-handed pitcher Mark Prior. According to industry sources, however, the Cubs want Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard included in the deal and don't want to trade top outfield prospect Felix Pie, whom the Orioles covet. The Orioles also are slightly wary of Prior's recent history of elbow troubles and would prefer obtaining Carlos Zambrano, but the Cubs reportedly have no interest in trading him.
