I was playing on Fulltilt last night and peeking in on a 50/100 LIMIT game

my question is why are people playing LIMIT poker where they can easily get sucked out on??
I witnessed it a few times peeking in on that game ...suck out Trip 2's on the river with all the calls for 100 to the river

what is the advantage to LIMIT for big stakes VS NO LIMIT

seems you can protect a hand MUCH better in NL...:icon_conf

Yes, you can protect a hand better in NL, but that just means that you don't allow your opponent to make mistakes. Limit makes some people draw for 6 outs when they are only getting 3-1 or 4-1 pot odds.

Sure it can be painful at times....but that's poker. Sometimes I find the worst players ever at the 20/40 and 30/60 limit tables.

I started out a limit player and did well, but like you said couldnt stand the suckouts and switched to SNGs and then NL cash games.

However if you think about it, when players are trying to suckout they are making calls which are against the odds. While they eventually catch miracles they are probably losing more often than in limit when they get driven out by large bets. So a very solid player who knows what he is doing will probably do better playing limit.

No-limit involves the most skill and I believe, in some cases, this game attracts better players who want to be able to win with their skill (rather than being sucked out on like you mention). So, if a good player knows that most skill players are playing no-limit, he can play limit instead and clean-up, relatively speaking. Also, some players REALLY DO NOT have the stomach for no-limit - that is, they are extremely risk averse. For instance, I do not consider myself a great poker player by any stretch of the imagination - but I am competent. I LOVE playing no-limit tournaments, but when it comes to cash games........I don't play my "true game" when I'm playing no-limit....it's hard for me to not think about all that cash. I enjoy no-limit more than limit, but I'm simply not at my best when I play it......so, realizing that, I stick with limit - even though it can be a much more frustrating game.

I think half the battle is recognizing your own weaknesses and staying away from those situations in which your weaknesses come out or get exploited. In other words, I can't play my very favorite form of poker because I'm not at my best when I do.

You can get sucked out in high limit NL too.

People call 200.00 bets like they are peanuts.

NL is like the crack cocaine of poker.

We all know we should be playing limit, but can't help ourselves.

I have statistically done very well playing NL.. However, I play a better limit game.

Further you don't have those huge swings in limit as you do in NL.

I play both.

Main difference is NL has a huge variance and you must know your opponents better.

Speaking of poker, don't overlook some nice cash games in 7-stud or Omaha. I can't speak for online games (I only play at the casino), but with the wave of Hold 'em popularity, an analogy could be made between poker games and horse racing:

Hold 'em is the BIG track.....NY and Cali
Omaha/7-stud are the small tracks.....not as many people are studying up and trying to become good at these games.

This will be even more true as time goes on, I think. More and more players will become competent at Hold'em and it will become harder to beat the games.

The only downfall with 7-stud/Omaha.......a lot of older, wiser (on average) players play these games, so they're not giving away huge amounts of money. But, you can grind out a profit at these games.

In NL any idiot can kill your entire stack with 1 bad play.

Tell me about it. I raise off the flop on one hand with a low two pair, the guy next to me raises and then a second guy goes all in. I figured the all in guy has a higher two pair if he's raising both of us so I drop the hand. He's raising two people! The guy who raised me goes in and the guy who bet all in, had absolutely nothing. He was just going for the ultimate bluff. Wanted to kill him for raising both of us.

Another time, I'm pounding the table from the begining with Aces and a women refuses to go out. She was going for the flush and pulled it on the river.

Bad players who are scared to play thier hand by themselves use the "All in" all the time. It leaves any poker they may have to play out of the whole hand.

As far as 50/100 limit. . I would love to play it if I had a bankroll for it. Yeah you will get sucked out sometimes, but in the long run its the loser who calls his 2-2 all the way to the river who will throw you his money.
