ESPN seems to think so.

I'm talking about not just this seasons Trojans but this whole run they've been on the past 3 years....greatest college team ever?

Miami, FSU, Nebraska, OU, Penn St. Bama, they've all had teams arguably best ever.

Best TEAM ever wouldn't apply because we're talking about 4 different teams - three that got to the National Championship game and one that got robbed.

IMO, this senior class at USC is the BEST CLASS in NCAA history, though.

how can this team be considered the greatest when they had a miraculous win to beat ND and struggled mightily against Fresno State and Arizona state?

A better question is,"Is ESPN the lamest excuse for a sports network".
If the Rose Bowl wasn't on Disney/ABC/ESPN they would never have this discussion-it is all self promotion and programming with these guys--if Texas were playing Penn St they would be asking the same thing about this Texas team.
I will say this-if SC stomps on,.I mean really clobbers Texas-then they are in the best ever discussion next to the 1972 Trojans.

I think this is a much harder question to answer than we think. I've had discussions about this with guys who have watched football for A LOT longer than I have and the only conclusion I can come up with is: I'M REALLY NOT SURE. I wasn't around to watch Rockne's '29 and '30 teams at Notre Dame. I never got to watch the golden domers from '46-49, or Oklahoma in '55 and '56, or Bear Bryant's '64 and '65 teams at 'Bama (even though both teams lost a game), or his late '70's teams. I have been able to see some damn good Miami teams in the '80's (and since then, as well), Nebraska in the '90's, I guess it's USC in the '00's.

Some of us may have seen some of those teams, but I'm not talking highlights, I'm talking about WATCHING these teams week in and week out. I can't look at highlights of Oklahoma's '55 team and determine if they're better than this USC run. I've grown up a Trojan fan, but I hear too many Trojan lovers who don't know what they're talking about say "No way Notre Dame or Alabama or Nebraska could have beaten them". It's like, "OK, well how do you know?" We don't even know who's going to win this year's Rose Bowl, let alone a game between 2 teams from 10 years apart.

Certainly the size and speed of players has improved with time, so we could say that USC would stomp Rockne's teams, but I think the question is who is the best "relative to the competition".

As a Trojan fan who does not want to be biased, I can't take the easy way out and say they're the best ever. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. One thing I know for sure, they're damn good!

Have to agree for 3 seasons. But this team the best ever? No. Still like the Nebraska team with Tommy Frazier and Lawrence Phillips. Also the Penn State team that crushed Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

of course they are.
And in a couple of years we will have another greatest team ever, happens in some spot every few years.
Realistically this is the worst of the last 3 Usc teams, the D is weak.

Think of it this day-- college champ with the best chance of being promoted to the pros, a la soccer-- & not get absolutely disgraced. Only two possibilities: UM & ND in their heydays

They were better last year.

100% agree and i would go 1 step further - the 2002 team (Carson Palmer's senior year) that killeed Iowa in the Orange Bowl was BETTER than this team

Because they're in the big show for the 3rd straight year in a row.

Not a chance. The greatest team in the history of college football would absolutely mop the floor with a Fresno St team that lost to Nevada and at home to La Tech. They very well could be the best offense ever and maybe the greatest short term dynasty ever but no way are they the best single season team ever. Give me a break.

ESPN is a joke. All about the hype all the time, no matter the sport. Have we even heard anything about Texas? The Horns have to be steaming watching Sportscenter suck on USC day after day.

On talent alone it has to be Miami - look at just some of the guys they had - Willis Mcgahee, Portis, Andre Johnson, Dorsey, Shockey, Mckinney (in fact the entire O-Line was considered the best ever giving up 4 sacks for the season) Wilfork, DJ Williams, Vilma, Ed Reed, Philip Bucanan, Michael Rumph - there are more I just can't remember.
