Indiana is nearing a three-team trade that would send swingman Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source has told ProBasketballNews.com.

Meanwhile, Lakers forward Devean George would end up in Indiana.

The third team involved in the proposed trade is the Toronto Raptors, according to the source. The Raptors would send Jalen Rose to Los Angeles -- and in return receive Pacers forward Austin Croshere and at least one player from the Lakers.

The source added that George and an undetermined player from the Raptors -- or perhaps a draft pick -- would be to dealt to the Pacers.

"Basically, it's Artest for Devean George, with the Raptors getting involved to make it work financially," the source said. "When and if it happens, this will be a trade that consists of plenty of throw-ins."

Three weeks ago, Artest told the Indianapolis Star that he wanted to be traded. He later apologized to his teammates and told management he would like to remain with the team. But Pacers president Larry Bird told The Indianapolis Star on Monday that he felt "betrayed" by Artest, and said the Pacers will indeed trade him.

Artest has been inactive since his comments about wanting to be traded, which came after he was injured against Dallas on Dec. 6. Since then, the Pacers have been flooded with trade requests.

Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh told the Associated Press on Wednesday the team had narrowed its options down from about 10 teams this week, but did not indicate when a trade might occur.

Artest averaged 19.4 points and 4.9 rebounds through 16 games this season. He was suspended for 73 games last year after the well-documented brawl during a game in Detroit.

Croshere is averaging 8.1 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Pacers, while Rose is scoring 9.6 points in just 25 minutes per game -- his lowest averages in both categories in nine seasons.

George is also near his career lows in scoring (5.6 ppg) and field-goal percentage (38 percent).

The source said he was not given a timetable as to when the proposed trade might take place. "I hear they are very close to finalizing everything, he said, "but it sounds like there are a few kinks that still need to be worked out."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

If it happens its a hugh trade for the Lake show. They getting an all star for absoultely nothing. Would have 3 all-star type players in there starting lineup in Artest, Kobe and Odom.

I don't know if Odom is an ALL STAR. Artest is an idiot and kobe is "all about me".

How can the league allow this trade? You can't tell me Indiana doesn't have better offers than George for Artest. That is ridiculous.

Kobe Best player in NBA. Artest Best Defender in NBA. Odom Great Role Player.

Was wrong to put Odom in the all star catagory. But if P Jackson can control artest and get 100% out of him Lakers will be a team to watch out for.

Maybe Indiana wants to clear the cap space which moving Croshere and Artest for an expiring contract in George would do. However this deal is full of holes so far with regards to making the cap numbers work.

Its a 3 team deal so I am sure there are some draft picks and other players involved. There has to be b/c it makes does not make much sense as it is presented.

As a Lakers fan would love to see it go through. D george for Artest is pure robbery.

recent reports indicate that this deal isn't likely to happen:

from rotoworld.com:
Indy Star reporter Mark Montieth was on WNDE 1260 radio in Indianapolis this afternoon and said that the report about Ron Artest and Jalen Rose going to the Lakers is not likely and that it was a case of "poor journalism."
Montieth went on to say that a trade with Denver was more likely, with Nene being the centerpiece of the deal. It sounds like Artest will be moved in the next two to three days, but Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird aren't about to tip their hand as to what they are working on. As for the Jalen and Artest to the Lakers story, it's still a possibility, but it doesn't sound probable as of right now. If nothing else, it sure livened up the basketball world today.

Hoopshype.com reporting Minnesota and Denver also in the running I think Denver is the favorite to land him.

Although remember McHale and Larry Bird are very good freinds so McHale might use that for leverage.

i think the deal could still happen, especially since the other deal they are referring to with denver isnt very likely since nene is out of the year and camby, who was having a great year, is proving himself to be fragile and untrustworthy once again.

apparently, indiana is willing to let artest go for nothing more than draft picks and or prospects for the future.

Should the deal with the Lakers go through, suspect Jackson will be able to get the most out of Artest. He was able to get Rodman to perform within the team concept and specialize in defense and rebounding. Artest brings scoring along with his intensity defensively. Can see him in the triangle offense because at times his spot up outside shooting is more then decent. If he goes to the Lakers, the bad boy may be a thing of the past.

If Artest went to Detroit....that would have been the top sports story in 2005!!!!

nobody wants him in Detroit. And Ben Wallace is the best Defender in the league, not Artest.

that would be horrible deal for Pacers, as they get basically nothing for him...

Hell i would rather them let the Lakers keep George, and send us back Jalen Rose....he had his best years in a Pacers uniform, we might get 2-3 more decent years out of him......

There is ALWAYS rumors about the Pacers and possible deals with Sacramento, wish they would trade him there, with another play for Peja......would love to see him here.....

I think Artest has to go, but to just let a player of that calliber simply go is not good business, gotta get something for him.....too many teams can use his talent, to let him just slip away..

I think whoever gets him in the trade will see a different Artest the rest of this season he will really want to make a point (AKA TO year one in philly) its next season when he could play bad boy and get in trouble.

One side of me thinks there is no way the Lakers get Artest unless they trade Odom.

On the other hand, the Pacers might be looking to get rid of him for a bag of basketballs.

Agree bucsfan I think the minny deal is better for them remember McCants was the number 14 pick in the draft and this kid is really going to be something 2 or 3 seasons from now he will be a NBA All Star someday I think and so do many in wolves managment

That would change things, they would be one big time player away from contention again.

The Lakers would be getting a good defensive player, who is also a threat to score on the offensive side court as well. Can't ask for more than that. He'll bring a defensive minded toughness to the Lakers. Phil needs this type of player.
