Mike Tice learned today that he will not be the coach of the Minnesota Vikings next year.
Mike Tice will not return as coach of the Minnesota Vikings next season.
Vikings owner Zygi Wilf has decided not to offer Tice an extension to his contract, which expires on Jan. 31. Tice was told of the decision about an hour after the Vikings beat the Bears 34-10 on Sunday. The team has announced a press conference for noon Monday to announce the decision.
The Vikings were 9-7 this season.
Tice, 32-33, was named interim coach for the team when Dennis Green was dismissed with one game remaining in the 2001 season. The Vikings were 6-10 in his first full season, then went 9-7 but missed the playoffs with a final-game loss at Arizona in 2003. They made the playoffs last season despite an 8-8 record, upsetting Green Bay in the first round before losing at Philadelphia.
Tice, 46, played 14 seasons in the NFL as a tight end for the Vikings and Seahawks. He started his coaching career as a tight ends coach under Green in 1995, the year after he retired. He was promoted to offensive line coach the following season, and added the title of assistant head coach before the 2001 season.
Tice was the sixth head coach in Vikings history, following Norm Van Brocklin (29-51-4 from 1961-66), Bud Grant (158-96-5 from 1967-83 and in 1985), Les Steckel (3-13 in 1984), Jerry Burns (52-43 from 1986-91) and Green (97-62 from 1992-2001).
