Go to lasvegasadvisor.com and on the left side it list their message boards. This is for the free side which you can get a lot of useful information if you tell them what you need. There is also a paid side which you get to join if you subscribe to their coupon booklet. Details of what's in the coupon book is listed on the home page. If you're coming in from out of town and aren't getting any comps at the hotels, this book can be very useful as it gives you a lot of 2 for 1 buffets which could help out your budget. It might also lead you to some hotels that you wouldn't think about going to, or know about, that you might enjoy! Have a great time.

By the way, there are a lot of regulars that reside there, some will bust your balls since they see a lot of the same questions time and again! Don't worry, ignore them and ask whatever you need to. Pay attention to what sparky says as he lives there and knows the town inside out! Have a great trip!

Alright, I am open to any recomendations. We are planning on staying at a cheap hotel. We figure since we wont be there that often we could careless where its at, as long as its in a safe location. Tell me if the El Cortez Hotel is in a safe location or not, and also if anyone has any suggestions fire away.

Vaulted,
We are having our big poker tourney the last weekend of January. Shoot me an email if you are interested, if not, we can hook up for a drink or two.

PublicMoney,
Take a pass on the El Cortez, they call it the Sweaty Spaniard for a reason. Not a place you want to be coming back to late at night either.

Go for something mid-range with a good location. You can get cheap rates at places like the Cortez, Stratosphere, Circus, etc. but they are a little out of the way. I assume you are making your first trip here and would like to pack some sighseeing in.

GreenDoberman: Could you suggest something that is off the strip that is in a decent location that is a little cheaper? Anyone else feel free to chime in. Thanks for all the help.

Publics,
Off the strip?
If that is what you are looking for, sure.

Gold Coast and Orleans are reasonable. Might even want to give the South Coast a try as well. I'm not a fan of Coast Casinos in general, but they will get you decent deals.

Palace Station is a bit older but can be very cheap. Fiesta/Texas/Santa Fe corridor can be had for cheap as well. And over on other side of town Sam's Town is sometimes a bargain.

Clarify why you want offstrip and for what reasons, so it can be narrowed down. I second the Las Vegas Advisor recommendation as well. Their coupon will have some 2-for-1's and even a free night or two in some outlying properties.

Publics, check The Orleans or Palace Station. Both are just off the west side of the strip. They are fairly nice decent sized hotels and may be cheaper than the larger strip hotels.

Orleans and Gold Coast. Both reasonably priced, both have a free shuttle down to Barbary (next door to Ballys).

Stratosphere is considered strip but might as well be offstrip because of isolation. Decent rooms - great prices to be had and you're super close to the strip.

IMO the Orleans is the best value for off-strip. Wherever you stay, ask that your room is not at the end of the hall. Nothing worse than getting down to the casino and then remember you forgot something from your room and then walking a half mile to get it.

If time is valuable, don't depend on shuttles free or otherwise. Rent a car. Even if you only use it for getting to your hotel and back to the airport. If you plan on consuming numerous adult beverages, take a cab.

Have a great time

Its worth paying the extra few bucks to stay at a class casino. Stay at a dump off the strip and you become prey for the criminal element here.

What are you talking about Sims? You mean the locals should be afdraid to play at their favorite casinos? Get real!

If I were you and wanted off the strip, I'd try Sam's Town or Boulder/Sunset Station! They have great food at all their restaurants that isn't expensive, and a two level casino. They are fairly good with comps, and pretty liberal giving you free rooms in the future. I get an offer for free rooms every single month, and I haven't been there in a year.

At Stations Casinos, there is a nice Jumbo Jackpot that starts at $100,000, and MUST be hit by $150,000. Even if you don't hit the big one, but are playing with their players card when it hits, you win $50 in slot play.
