iowa lost....okay...but what bullsht....i even had michigan and illini fans telling me we got screwed. Florida brought the homer refs today....I about went out on the field and tackeled them!!!.... there was definitely no offsides on the onside kick....that is all i was asking for....they atleast would've had a chance....won't talk about the block punt and int for TDs...just fluke mistakes.....but FLORIDA got 2 xmas gifts in the last 2 minutes of 1st half...horseshit call on a punt followed by a personal foul on qb as he was diving forward (not sliding) and hit simultaneously by a defender.....led to a TD....even though Iowa played poorly in first half....florida should not have scored with 1 second left and iowa should've definitely been given a chance at end of game after recovering onsides!!! FUCK!!! 31-7 at one point and iowa should've had a chance at end of game to tie it up....FUCK YOU SEC REFS!

Viking, you either drink like a little girl or type a hell of a lot better than I do smoked-because I would be SMOKED right now after getting that homer job.

I wonder if this will be enough to start a stink nationally? You know the call in shows will be lit up.

viking611, what about Iowa getting away with two holds and a block in the back vs LSU on last year's final play of Cap-One Bowl?

But do think that Iowa was hosed today.

Yes...Iowa hosed today....everyone i've talked to has said so....the announcers on the radio said so....and espn has said so as well...as far as the dominating performence in cap one bowl.....i don't know what you are talking about....for anyone who wants to see the last play...make your own conclusions here.....

They were Conf. USA officials. I really believe that is one of the problems that occur during these bowl games. We get 2nd class officials to work 1st class games. Conference USA is just a tad bit below the levels of Big 10 and SEC football. Time for the NCAA to do something about this, it happens time and time again.

We have gotten screwed too. Everyone does sooner than later. I am sorry the game ended the way it did, but just accept it and move on. I feel bad for Iowa fans, but what do you want us to do? Apologize for bad neutral officials?

no...just wanted to get that out and make sure everyone who had iowa knows they got screwd....they should've just had a chance at the end of the game...not counting the crap from earlier in the game.....was at the game today wasted so wanted to make sure i was correct in my thinking and based off the # of calls i've gotten from unbiased fans and from the headlines on espn and hearing on radio...they got screwed.....need to get top officials in for major bowl games....conf usa is not major officials.

That official who made the offsides call needs to be exposed. He should be questioned and than fired, it's as simple as that.

Iowa player apparently was NOT offside.

During the kick, Florida had 12 players on the field.

It was a Conference USA crew.

This same referee, during a would be favorite covering drive, called 3 consecutive holding calls (2 in redzone) vs. TCU a few years ago.

Apparently, he bet Florida to win yesterdays game???

Iowa had asses kicked, but Florida seemed to have a bit of help from zebras.

Is that a fact?

Wow!

But as stated previously, IOWA lost the game THEMSELVES throughout the game.

Yep, Florida had 12 players on the field during the onside kick attempt...no flag was thrown.

7 officials on field and that is a basic duty on every play...especially a kicking play.

USA Today page 5c (bottom left) also mentioned Florida having 12 guys on field during the onside attempt.

Amazing!

Guess maybe I should be upset at the officiating crew.

Bowl season is maybe the biggest attraction for loyal college football fans. For the faithful, it is a last chance to watch their favorite teams before a long and seemingly endless offseason. For some of the players, it is the last time they will ever wear their college uniform. Unfortunately, the images and memories of that final game may be bittersweet, and even foul tasting at times. That will likely be the case for a pair of Big Ten teams.

Michigan fans will try to make sense of how the Wolverines found a way to lose to Nebraska. The Michigan defense allowed Cory Ross and a Husker squad that ranked 108th in the nation to run wild on them. Ross, who averaged approximately 74 yards per game during the regular season, rushed for 161 yards on mighty Michigan. But the game will be more remembered for the Sun Belt officiating crew that appeared clueless at times.

The Sun Belt officiating crew had never before used replay and it clearly showed.

A possible Nebraska fumble wasn't reviewed and the Cornhuskers eventually scored a touchdown in the first half.

In the third quarter, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr was forced to use a time-out to allow the officials enough time to consider a replay on a Nebraska touchdown, which was overruled after a review. But the best was saved for last.

On what was to be the final play of the game, the Wolverines employed a number of laterals to keep the play alive. But when the ball hit the turf, players began rushing onto the field in what almost looked to be a replay of the classic Cal-Stanford game of years ago. Amazingly, not one flag was thrown by the officials and the game ended with Michigan in possession of the ball on the Nebraska 13-yard line.

If the subpar officiating in the Michigan-Nebraska game was hard to watch, the Conference USA crew made the Iowa-Florida game nearly unbearable to view.

Florida jumped out quickly 17-0 on Iowa and looked to have the Hawks right where they wanted them. But then Iowa came to life and closed the gap to 17-7 with barely over a minute left in the opening half. Then the officials got involved.

After Iowa was hit with a questionable flag for running into the punter that gave the ball back to the Gators, Chris Leak scrambled on first down and was brought down after a minimal gain. Defensive end Kenny Iwebema was flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit, but the replay clearly showed that Iwebema never came close to hitting Leak with his helmet. The flag stopped the clock and gave the Gators the ball inside the Iowa 40-yard line. A few plays later, Florida got their 17 point lead back. If the call unnerved some, it would only get uglier in the second half.

In the third quarter, the Iowa defense was flagged for interfering with the Gators count. Instead of facing a third down situation, the call, which I had yet to see called in the 2005 season until this game, gave the Gators a first down and Florida scored on the very next play to make the score 31-7.

On the very next possession, the ridiculous became idiotic as Iowa receiver Clinton Solomon was penalized 15 yards for grabbing a face mask. The major problem with the call was that Solomon was the one who was dragged down by the face mask by a Florida defender Vernell Brown.

Officials may have tried to make up for their ineptitude later by giving Iowa a gift first down when Solomon was clearly brought down two yards short of the marker. Unfortunately, it did nothing to improve the competence level of the C-USA crew.

And they continued to blow obvious calls by not flagging Florida for too many men on the field on at least one occasion. But possibly the best......or worst was saved for last by this crew.

After Iowa scored 17 unanswered points in the final quarter to narrow the score to 31-24, the teams lined up for the obvious onsides kick.

Iowa kicker Kyle Schlicher hit the ball perfectly and when Scott Chandler recovered, visions of a replay of the comeback victory over LSU a year ago in the Capitol One Bowl were alive and well. But the officials quickly dashed any hopes by calling Iowa offsides on the kickoff. Once again, the replay clearly showed the call was dead wrong, but the Hawkeyes hopes for a comeback were over.

Considering how Nebraska and Florida moved the ball on the Big Ten teams, there is no guarantee Iowa or Michigan could have beaten their bowl opponents. Florida shut down the Iowa ground attack and the Huskers ran the ball almost at will on the Wolverines. The unfortunate part is that no one will ever know if Iowa or Michigan could have come back and won.

Every player who walks onto the football field knows there is a distinct possiblity he could walk off on the losing end. Victory is guaranteed to no one. But there is no worse feeling than not having the chance to win.

Sadly, that is what the Sun Belt and Conference USA crews did to Michigan and Iowa. They cheated them of their chance to win with their inept officiating.

The powers that be bemoan the fact that having a playoff system would hurt the integrity of the bowls.

Maybe those same people should think about what handing major bowl assignments to inept officiating crews does for the integrity of their precious bowls.

Like I have said, absolutely inexcusable for a 7 person crew to miss 12 players on field during a kicking play.

The referee is alone at the GOALLINE and MUST count ALL receiving players prior to ALL kickoffs. Prior to him whisling the ball ready for play and prior to kickoff, he and at least 2 other officials MUST signal they have 11 receiving players.

If they would have counted, (which he and others obviously did not), he would have known Florida had 12 on field when he made ball ready, and a flag would have been thrown after the kick for illegal participation (15 yards).

Instead, they called a very weak and probably incorrect offside vs. Iowa, when the replay showed he was probably not offside.

The helmet to helmet is sometimes missed, and that is mostly judgement (not always perfect). All officials are told to protect QBs, so he was doing what most referees would have done. It sucked for those of us who had Iowa, for it was a critical time of game and led to a TD before half. However, sometimes judgement calls go the wrong way.

However, I know this particular referee sucks and has sucked ever since he was promoted to wear the white hat.

Conference USA should strip him of his referee position and either demote him to another position, suspend him from all future bowl games, or altogether remove him and others on this crew from the staff.

I am not sure whether or not the SEC Steve Shaw crew has worked a bowl game. If not, I hope his crew is doing the USC/Texas game. He is without a doubt the best referee in NCAA.

There are plenty of great crews in NCAA throughout all the conferences. However, this particular Conference USA referee should not be wearing a uniform and his crew especially should not have been assigned to work a major bowl game.
