I had the Kings tonight (first hockey bet in forever), and they won in OT after some heroic goal scoring (1st goal scored with 0.7 secs in the 2nd period, and the second, game tying goal scored with 26 seconds in the third, setting up an OT win.) I should be thrilled. I should be dancing for joy, as I finally get a 'bad win'.
But this has got to be the most boring, unattractive, tedious sport mankind has ever invented.
I've always been a baseball fan. Prior to my introduction to gambling some 8 years ago, I never watched a single football or basketball game. But as soon as I started, I could immediately appreciate aspects of those games. Even someone who's never seen a sporting event would be awed by an alley-oop, a dunk, a diving catch, a good tackle, a strikeout, a home run, etc. These are things that are objectively appealing to the eye...fluid, exciting, graceful moves.
There is NOTHING graceful about hockey. This Kings game was the first I watched in a very long time. The whole damn thing looks so haphazard, disorganized, and arbitrary. There is no fluidity to it, but for the occasional pass that is <SHOCKING!> not broken up, the rare goal that scores on a nice slap shot. But those moments are few and far between. Most of the game looks to me, an outsider, as completely discombobulated.
I know it's more complex than that. I know there are 'plays', and obviously, good teams prevail more often than bad teams, indicating that there is skill involved. But to the uninitiated, hockey is ugly. Really ugly.
I guess there's a hardcore fanbase who're brought up loving and understanding the game. But failure to captivate a vast majority of the next generation will always doom this bizarre game to the bottom of the heap, as far as the popularity of the four 'major sports' are concerned.
