SOUTHFIELD - Former champion boxer Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns was charged Monday with assault and battery after police say he had an altercation with his 13-year-old son.
Hearns was arraigned on the misdemeanor charges before Southfield Magistrate Eugene Friedman on Monday morning. He was released on a $10,000 personal bond and ordered not to have contact with his son. A date for his preliminary examination has not been set.
Police were called to Hearns' home on the 20000 block of South Norwood in Southfield about 7 p.m. Sunday on a domestic disturbance complaint, said Detective John Harris. According to police, Hearns, 47, was arguing with his son when it became physical. Hearns' wife stepped in and there was a scuffle, police said. The boy suffered minor injuries. The exact nature of the argument is not known.
Hearns could not be reached for comment. It is unknown if he has an attorney. His former manager, Emmanuel Steward, said on Monday he was unaware of the arrest and had no comment.
Hearns made headlines this year with a comeback in August when he won an eighth-round technical knockout against John Long in a cruiserweight bout in Detroit.
This isn't the fi rst time police have been called to Hearns' Southfield home. In June 1989, Tommy Hearns' younger brother, Henry Hearns, shot his fiancee, 19-year-old Nancy Ann Barile, in the face. He was convicted of second-degree murder and is serving a 25-50 year prison sentence.
Henry Hearns, now 39, claimed Barile was shot as he tried to take a gun away from her during a suicide attempt. At the time, Henry Hearns was house-sitting for his brother. Tommy Hearns had been in Las Vegas to fight Sugar Ray Leonard.
