to prevent them other than not opening suspicious emails? I never open those, don't go to porn sites, and have more viral problems than a West Hollywood Ho.:sad3: :sad3: :monsters-

I would say that not opening suspicious emails and not clicking "YES I want to install xyz" in every single box that comes up trying to install activex controls............should keep you pretty safe

silly question 1) do you use any antivirus software?
silly question 2) do you use dialup or broadband?
silly question 3) do you have all patches for the version of windows that you use?

Since I switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox more than a year ago--Have NOT had one single problem (knock on wood) with virus. The folks at Spysweeper told me that IE was the biggest reason for virus--spyware .

Either go to Mozilla(Firefox), or get a MAC PC.

Trust me those answers on the top is your only solution.
Never trust Internet Explorer. I only use mozilla and nothing else.

You dont have to open an email to get infected....In outlook if you have a preview pane that views the email then it is infected and will cointinue to be.
I have just learned to live with it...I visit too many Porn sites and Warez sites...Every few years I just get a new computer

dont pay money for any of that stuff, you can get perfectly good spyware software for free, and same with antivirus but often the pay AV softwares are easier to setup/use for novice computer users

best option, switch to firefox and thunderbird and avoid IE/outlook at all costs

Exactly. Between my free virus protection and Firefox, I've had nothing in the form of a virus for about two years. :103631605

Also, get that patch I posted for Windows in the computer section.

Agree with the advice of not opening suspicious emails.....I know caution is the best route and if it appears to be too good to be true then it usually is....

But how do I know if I'm deleting an email that contains herpes or kicking Ed McMahon to the curb along with a check that contains like 9 digits?

You will never get an email that has a check for 9 digits. Ever.

What is a "preview pane"?
I have Outlook Express and when I open it and there are emails from people that I don't recognize; what I do is hit edit---hit select all and hit delete.

If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, Norton Internet Security will scan all incoming and outgoing emails. Between that, it's firewall, and it's real time virus scanner, you should be in good shape as long as you keep up to date with Windows Updates.

BTW....Don't forget that we now have a Computer & Tech Help Room with a lot of useful info and knowledgeable people :103631605

I've heard that if you are using cable that a router is a great solution even if you only have one PC.

A router is only for routing internet traffic. Router won't do you any good, unless it's has built in firewall. Plus router won't help much with java, scripts and addwares unless it's a Cisco router.

Most home routers, however, (D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, etc) have firewalls and lots of protection built in for the average home user. A combination of a home firewall/router, software antivirus and antispyware and non-MS software should eliminate 99.9% of viruses you will encounter

And you can use virus checkers with OE and IE and other MS products but the vast majority of viruses are aimed at those softwares, so you're better off using an alternate, not to mention in the case of Firefox and Thunderbird, they're actually better
