Before you toss this aside as "another idiot poster," listen up.

A few years ago Atlanta, as a dog, went to Green Bay and won outright. After the game a Falcon player said that during warmups he and his teammates could tell that the Packers did not have their hearts into the game.

Some dozen years ago an ex-player published a book in which he stated that a number of players DO NOT WANT TO BE IN THE POSTSEASON! For whatever reason - they're banged up and want to rest, they have vacations planned, or they don't think they can go all the way, so why bother?

(I can't recall the name of the book or the author, and neither can anyone on this board, as I asked a week ago.)

I don't know if the Giants left their collective heart somewhere else, rather than bringing it to the Meadowlands today (and you could likley check local news reports on the Net until you go blind without being able to find out), but it is certainly a possibiblity.

Annoucer just noted that Giants are "flat."

Understand that: flat, for a playoff game! Definitely a possibility.

It is a myth that all teams in the postseason are raring to go. In the just ended college bowls, we know that some teams, if in a lower tier bowl than they think they deserve, will not have thier hearts into the game.

Oregon this season was a prime example, they thought themselves worthy of a BCS bowl. (They were, but Notre Dame draws more free-spending fans.)

Last year California left their hearts in San Francisco, for the same reason.

UCLA used to routinely coast in bowl games, if they weren't in the Rose. (This was before the BCS.) Kansas State also usually left the aortas at home when in an "inferior" bowl.

And we have the testimony of the Falcon player 2-3 years ago, and the author of the book I cited. (No one knows the name of that book?!)

I think all postseasons have malingers. Some may not even know they are malingering. Hard to control emotions.

The only postseason in a major sport where all teams always seem to be "up" is the NCAA Tournament, the Big Dance. Even Obscure U playing Duke in the first round it out to show the world they can play.

The Giants are not flat. They're bad. They're getting beaten up. In front of their fans. I'd look for an excuse too.

The Giants played good ball all year in front of their fans. It's just a shame whats happening today.

According the ex Nfl player (a former Raider, I think) yeah, they're planning vacations, they don't believe they have it to advance to the Super Bowl, and they come out "flat," like the Giants. In most cases tho I'd imagine the depression is less specific, just a general malaise.

I read a reveiw of this book about a dozen or 15 years ago, where this was mentioned. Never read the book, wish I did so I could get it and directly quote it. But it was, you know, FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH.

A stupid person can say a stupid think just to sound interesting in a book. Adrenaline is always pumping. You come flat when you get your ass handed to you. Giants came out pumped, they got bitchslapped, they seem flat now.

Sorry, I have a hard time believing players wouldn't be able to postpone their vacations in favour of a playoff game. Don't they get bonuses and stuff for winning in the playoffs? And what does it cost to re-book a trip, especially in light of their multi-million dollar salaries.

Giants just suck today. You could make a better argument that they shouldn't even be in the playoffs than they might be throwing the game 'cause "Hawaii's calling."

Now that I have wasted my time reading this thread, I would like to toss it aside as another idiot poster.

There is agrain of truth to that with some players. I think Tim Green(the old Falcon) wrote about that in his excellent book. Some players , on lower wrung play-off teams, feel its almost impossible to win so they don't really sell-out and risk further injury when they think its pretty hopeless anyway.
