Should The Texans Draft Vince Young Instead Of Reggie Bush?

Just for discussion, thought I'd pose this question to the forum. Now, I realize that the Texans drafted David Carr as the No.1 pick but am not familiar with his contract specifics. But, for the sake of discussion, Vince Young having now played for the college of Texas, would bring size, strength, speed, mobility and perhaps efficiency to the quarterback position. Even though they could add more balance to their current offense with Bush, who looks to be a special player, perhaps a creative deal for Carr to obtain offensive lineman and/or more draft choices might be a way to go. Want do you think?

With his mechanics as a passer I doubt it, I doubt very seriously he will be a good QB let alone a great one ,worthy of a top pick.

And David Carr has had no help down there....He gets sacked every other play, they don't need a QB they need a line.

I would take Bush hands down over Young, I wouldn't take Young in the top 10.

I feel everyone from Texas needs a reality check on this issue. These are people who say Reggie Bush didn't do that well in the rose bowl game. Take away the boneheaded lateral and Bush has 6.3 yards per carry for 82 yards 1 TD, 100 yards receiving, and countless amount of total yards. Only because this guy is from another planet is this considered "poor". Vince Young will suffer a familiar fate like Michael Vick. With that being said I wouldn't draft Young in the Top 10 if I were a NFL General Manager. Why?
It's not because of his overall talent level.
It's not because of his intelligence level.
It's not because of his throwing motion.
It's not because of his experience level.
It's not because of any intangible.

It's simply because no owner in the National Football League has guts to use him to his fullest abilities. He's a guy that will command a $100-150 million contract early in his career. That is the type of contract that limits a team's ability to improve in other areas. No owner in today's NFL has the balls to put $150 million at risk by letting their franchise QB really run wild. It's like having a Ferrari in the driveway and only driving it to church. It's stupid, but it's what NFL owners insist upon doing. Time after time.

Now are they wrong? Are they right? I'm not sure, you can make cases for both sides. But when you check out the injured list year in and year out, you do find the names of McNabb McNair Culpepper Lefty, on it.

I am still not sold on the fact that Young will go before Leinhart. Before the Rose Bowl Leinhart was clearly ahead of him on everyones list. He did out play him in one game, but lets see how he grades out in the combines or individual workouts.

The only reasons the Texans would take him is for merchandising purposes and a short term boost to profits. Think about the Eagles, Vikings, Falcons, Jaguars before their current QBs. I would guess that revenues increased in all of those teams during the 3-5 years after the selection of those QBs. I think it will be more likely that Vince falls to a 5-10 pick after the combines - if he chooses to go. Most interesting will be to see who his agent is - that will be an indicator of his value.

After the recent factor dies down, people will come to their senses and realize that Bush and Leinart are the better NFL prospects. The only scenario I can see where Young goes over these 2 is a Houston trade situation and in a way that might be a good move by an organization that badly needs to gather some momentum. VY would definitely sell tix for a couple years anyway, one cannot say that about David Carr. I can easily see this becoming a reality.

Vince Young ain't doing shit in the NFL - ever see him drop back in the pocket and look poised - nope - he looks like Vick - ever see Manning, Brady or McNabb sit in the pocket - very comfortable - combine that with an erratic arm - and spinkle in horrible mechanics and you've got a wasted pick - and being 6-5 does not really help when you throw side armed.

Latest word is the Titans will take Young at #3, after Bush and Leinart. Steve McNair has worked a lot with Young in the pass, and was his guest at the Rose Bowl. McNair is pushing for them to take him so he can groom him to be the next Titans QB once McNair retires.

This is all dependent upon the Titans re-signing McNair, of course. But apparently that's the plan as of right now.

I can definitely see that happening.

Assuming the Texans don't trade their first pick, I can see the draft going

1) Bush to the Texans
2) Leinart to the Saints
3) Young to the Titans

The Saints drafting a college system player like Leinart with the #2 pick would be par for the course for that franchise. He has nowhere near the talent that Carson Palmer has - weaker arm and much less mobile. Any decent QB could succeed with the kind of talent that Leinart had around him - I really don't see much difference between the abilities of Matt Leinart and Jason White.

When you have top picks you draft big name QB's or RB's. Whether you need them or not. In reality the Texans need neither. They need close to everything else. Guru consultant Dan Reeves loves David Carr, but he loved Tommy Maddox so his judgement is questionable at best. But in a need world Texans would draft Bush and trade one of their many RB's for a few linemen. Next Leinart to Saints. Guy has decent arm, real nice accuracy. But the Saints have a several decade long record of futility and QB's that flop like a fish on hot cement. See Aaron Brooks. They need Leinart. Young? Last time I checked he was a running QB, and what have they done lately. That was in and out of fashion in a minute. Gimme that pocket passer with slight scrambling ability, no cigar store wooden indians. Maybe Titans, if they keep mentor McNair. However can you afford him and Young? One fantastic Rose Bowl is hardly enough to elevate him so fast. But he is indeed very sharp to come out now, as his stock could not be higher. He could slide to 4 or 5.

The Texans need to take Bush and then build an OLine through trades and free agency.

Carr at QB will be fine (even above average) if he gets protection and a running game...just like most QBs.

They will have a legit back in Bush.

Their receivers are decent with Andre Johnson and Jabar Gaffney. They could use a burner but their receivers can get the job done if the QB has time and they have a running game.

Bottom line is no skill position player will have an impact on this team unless the OLine gets better.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

For Vince Young:
Bus Cook will be his agent. Cook represents McNair, who is Young's close friend and mentor.

"He's shown that he's a quarterback in college, and I expect him to be one of the best at the next level," said McNair, who attended Wednesday's game to support Young.
One of Young's uncles was McNair's teammate at Alcorn State. After the Oilers drafted McNair in the first round in 1995, the uncle introduced McNair to his nephew.
McNair saw a kid with a lot of talent, a kid who needed some guidance and a role model. Young started attending McNair's quarterback camps, and over time, they've become as close as brothers.
"It's been a pleasure watching him mature as a player and as a person in the years I've known him," McNair said. "He's what an NFL quarterback's all about in this day and age. He can beat you with his arm or his legs.
"And he has the leadership abilities required of NFL quarterbacks."
Young has what NFL scouts call "it." It's a magnetism that's contagious. He leads. Teammates follow. And they win.
A survey of five NFL scouts who have to remain anonymous because Young hasn't declared for the draft shows that his stock will never be higher. All five scouts are responsible for the state of Texas, and each said Thursday he was awed by Young's performance against Southern Cal.

Not so fast, ESPN

Don't believe two reports on ESPN and ESPN.com regarding the Texans on Saturday.

The first one said the Texans were talking to the Titans about possible compensation for coach Jeff Fisher. Anyone with any common sense would know that there is no way that Tennessee owner Bud Adams would let his head coach come to the Texans.
The second report said the Texans had decided they would take USC running back Reggie Bush, which was true before Vince Young's spectacular performance in the Rose Bowl. But the ESPN report also said that even if Young comes out early the Texans already have made up their minds to take Bush with the first pick.
Also not true. The Texans have not even begun their evaluation of Young because few thought he would leave the Longhorns a year early.
"It's premature to say anything until our new coaching staff gets in, and they are able to analyze our team, the draft and what happens in free agency,"
Looking back

The last time Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick had a good touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio was 2002 — Dan Reeves' last season as coach.

Vick threw 16 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. He also ran for eight touchdowns that season.
Since Reeves was fired, Vick has thrown 14 and 15 touchdown passes and 12 and 13 interceptions. His touchdown runs have dropped, too, from three to six, since Reeves got his pink slip.

Bad deal

In 2001, the Seahawks agreed to swap first-round positions with the Packers to acquire Green Bay backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

Green Bay moved into the 10th spot and selected Florida State defensive end Jamal Reynolds, a monumental bust.
Seattle dropped into the 17th spot and selected guard Steve Hutchinson, who is going to the Pro Bowl this season.
By the way, Hasselbeck has been to two Pro Bowls and led Seattle to the home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs
