As inconsistent with the known laws of science as superstition may be, when it comes to courting Lady Luck, even the most rational of gamblers would just as soon not tempt fate. That's at least one plausible reason why both bettors and bookmakers will go to such illogical lengths to entice good fortune.

I learned very early working in Nevada - never put the extra point on the board until after it is kicked and you know for sure it was good!

Fear of the 13th is well founded since the Roman Ides fall on the 13th of the month, except for the months of March, May, July and October when they fall on the 15th.
