Simple answer-"The" or some syndicates simultaneously getting down multiple max plays at as many books as possible before the line moves due to their own action.

If betcris or Pinnacle or Olympic moves a line one way. (this being books that move on air), and then you go bet the game at a slow moving book that that still has the old line.

How would one best describe steam?

STEAM = large volume on a single game (on a particular side) at the same time

or

STEAM = co-ordinated, simultaneous, large volume wagers on the same team by many people at various books

Chasing steam would be what I mentioned above

ok, next question..

exactly how much money is involved to move a line.. i realize you probably won't see huge moves on NFL right now (given the huge volume of public action), but something like the FSU bowl game where the line moved from +10 to +8.5 in literally 20 minutes.. approx. how much $ has to go down on that side to make such a drastic move?

Nice question. I hope someone answers.

The one thing I do know is that once a line moves at a major book, many other books are simply following the move off the screen.

ive been the victim of reverse steam chasing the original steam. careful. line will move a point or two one way, then next thing its 3 the other way.
when keeping track of that alot of times they hit the middle and win both bets also.

It depends. When Pinny was booking the Canadian Curling Trials last month with a $100 maximum and a 16 cent line I found my limit bet would move the line 14 cents.

Since the NFL playoffs are an 8 cent line with $100,000 limit (currently circled at $50,000) I would expect a $50,000 bet would move the line 5/6 cents.

I can't test this with NFL bets but the Curling sure made me feel like a high roller. :lolBIG:

Pinnacle's NFL lines are rock solid during the playoffs. When I bet $60,000 on the internet on their $100,000 limits, the line moved 1 cent. And within the hour was back to the original line.

It will take much larger hits, ie on the telephone to move them much more.

PS This was later in the week, ie once the line had settled and the game wasn't circled anymore.

Steam is when the market price (pointspread, ML, half, etc) moves significantly and virtually simultaneously across the broad market spectrum.

What is "significant" depends on the market, and I suppose, perception. But when a basketball spread moves from -7 to -8.5 at 99% of online books within a 2-minute window....that is STEAM.
