Before the 2005 college football season becomes a vague memory to most fans, and because I just did some winter housecleaning and am about to toss some magazines in the trash, I thought it would be fun to list the top 10 picks of three of these guys.

One if from the Gold Sheet, about the only pre-season mag I pay for. As with many other bettors, I get a ton through the mail, gratis. Paid for surreptitiously by offshore books, who amazingly, are always on top in the obligatory pages naming the "best" offshore books in the galaxy.

Some of these went out when received, but here are the picks for the three I saved. They all gave their top 25. To save time and space I'll list their top ten only.

Two of the three had Oklahoma in the top ten. (Bruce Marshall of TGS had then at # 11.) I guess the gurus accept the propaganda that "they don't re-build, they just re-load." Even tho the Sooners lost around 8 players in the first three rounds of April's NFL draft. (USC lost 3 key defensive players in the first two rounds of that draft, which is likely why their D was much more pourous than it was the prior season.)

Penn State was named in the top 25 only by Phil Steele (He had them at #19.) I thus must accuse the foots guru fraternity of an ageist conspiracy, deserving immediate action by various self-appointed members of our Thought Police.

No guru should get points for listing USC # 1, and Texas not far behind. Your toddler could have done that. But the howlers we can all see.

TGS's list: 1 - USC 2 - Tennessee 3 - Ohio State 4 - Florida 5 - Texas 6 - Iowa 7 - Va Tech 8 - LSU 9 - Michigan 10 - Louisville

Phil Steele in something called Insider's Football News: 1 - USC 2 - LSU 3 - Purdue 4 - Louisville 5 - Texas 6 - Miami Fl 7 - Michigan 8 - Oklahoma 9 - Ohio St 10 - Georgia

And an unnamed wizard from Insider's Betting Digest (wow, don't we love to be misinformed by "insiders!"): 1 - USC 2 - Tennessee 3 - Ohio State 4 - LSU 5 - Iowa 6 - Texas 7 - Miami 8 - Arizona State 9 - Oklahoma 10- Florida

Yes, it's true, old preseason picks are like yesterday's toilet paper, a little smelly and unpleasant to see, and fit only to be sent promptly down the drain. Which I shall do forthwith.
