Do College or Pro coaches ever use the point spread to motivate their players?

I would bet that there are times when a coach shows his team the line in the paper that shows that his team is a four touchdown underdog to say something like, "Let's show them that they are all wrong. We are better than that. Let's prove to the whole world that they were wrong." Perhaps a guy like Cowher would show his team the line in the paper that shows they are 10 point dogs to get them more pissed off. Who knows, just a theory.:modemman:

Without question they do!!

In fact, sometimes coaches will flat out mention this in the media for all to hear.

Don't bet on it...An NCAA slogan and warning! Every D-1 athlete must go through indoctrination from videos, compliance officers, and athletic directors. I assure you the "line" is never discussed between coach and player.

Absolutely - many times I have heard post game interviews where the coach will say "No way there are two touchdowns better than us," or "I really can't believe they were the favorite".

Not only are the coaches aware, the alumni that pump millions and millions into the big schools are making sure the coaches and players are well aware of the exact number.

Maybe not the college coaches, but you can bet your ass that the boosters make sure that the players know.

No doubt about it...the players all know, especially football where they see the line all week long between games.

"They think we're how many point underdogs"?

For what it's worth...

I spoke with Chris Meyers from FOX Sports at an airport last month. I asked him if he has ever heard players discussing lines. He said he hasn't heard players discuss spreads, but he has heard them discuss totals.

Bears have referenced it in a roundabout way all season when they were underdogs.
