Whether it is Flip a burger Saunders or Larry the old fart brown, coaches have very little impact on a teams record.

The only exception is Phil Jackson. He is the only person who can turn a team around.

NBA IS ALL HYPE.

I dunno about that one..they say there's much more coaching going on in the NBA then at the college level, always have heard this.

Larry Brown has won everywhere (except NY so far), certain coaches , Geoge Karl is another one, that seem to get more from players than the average coach.

Phil Jackson has had some of the greatest teams given to him in NBA history, let's see Phil go turn around the Hawks.

Perhaps these coaches just choose to join teams with good player talent

With Flip Pistons would have been back to back champions. Brown cost them a championship.

underrated skill: playcalling down the stretch, which the coaches tend to handle. sometimes it looks like freestyling but some of these guys are gettin open looks late for a reason----
these coaches have a good ability to come up wtih different look as well, and draw upon hundreds of plays they've ran in their careers.

D'Antoni has been masterful in a year and a half. No he doesn't win games with a play call at the end, but he wins them by playing to the team's strengths and flow. He benches cold players and keeps in hot ones even if the matchups don't dictate it. They never come close to having the 62 wins last year with someone else and are probably a game or two above .500 this year as well. He has made a huge difference in as the team's motto says "Making basketball fun again".

I agree with your first paragraph

Disagree with the second. If Phil didnt have Jordan, Shaq and Kobe do you think he would have won 9 championships?
WTF has he done this year thats so great?

He is te most overrated coach in the history of professional sports

I dont know how the lakers lost to Detroit when the top two players on the court played for the lakers? Jackson is so overrated...and the year before they lost to the spurs...poor coaching cost the lakers

I hate Phil Jackson, but the Lakers were totally underachieving until Phil arrived, and then they won 3 championships, and lost in the finals once.

1) NBA coaches don't make a difference? I used to think that way (about every sport)...when I was 8 years old. You think NBA coaches magically appear on the bench in a suit & tie, 5 minutes before tipoff? In addition to in-game management, NBA coaches have LOTS of non-game responsibilities.
2) I think Phil gets too much credit for his career, but he is doing a great job this year. They've got Kobe, they've got Odom. Other than that, how many of their players would start for a decent team? Plus, Kobe and Odom have...ummmmm..."unique" personalities. Somehow, Phil has this team in the playoff race.
3) Lakers had the top two players on the court, Pistons had the next best five. Not sure why people still think this was such an upset.
