"People will hear music this year," says Axl Rose, puffing on a cigar in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
The notoriously reclusive rocker is of course referring to Guns n' Roses' decade-in-the-making Chinese Democracy, arguably the most anticipated album in rock & roll history. "It's a very complex record," says Rose, a surprise guest at Korn's tour announcement bash. (Others in the house: Jessica Alba, cast members of The OC, and members of Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and the Used.) "I'm trying to do something different. Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns n' Roses.'" He then smiles and adds, "But you'll like at least a few songs on there."
Dressed in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, cross hanging around his neck, cornrows still intact and sporting a blonde goatee, Rose strolled into the party around 1 a.m., just as the DJ was coincidentally rocking some vintage Gn'R. Approached by a steady stream of women and hard-rock disciples -- including Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin and Papa Roach's Dave Buckner -- Rose is cordial and chatty as he poses for photo after photo. He seems more like an average guy out for a night with friends than the most mythical rock star on the planet in 2006.
And he maintains that that's exactly what he is. "The only time people ever write about me is when I go out to a strip club, because I don't chase the paparazzi down," he says. And, when he's out of the spotlight, Rose says you'll find him doing average-guy stuff: reading books and watching movies. His favorite book is Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. "I was a little scared when I saw they were making it into a movie starring Keanu [Reeves]," he says. "But I guess if he can handle The Matrix, he can do this."
While Rose and his revolving cast of Gn'R bandmates have been working on Chinese Democracy, Papa Roach have achieved platinum status in their own right. But tonight, their drummer reverts to his teenage fan days, asking Rose for a picture and to guest on Papa Roach's next album. Rose strikes a pose and then graciously refers the fellow rocker to his management.
After all, before he lends his talents to others' projects, Rose has one of his own to finish, and he says it's getting there. "We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues."
As for a reunion with his former Gn'R mates, that seems unlikely. "I haven't spoken to Slash in ten years," Rose says. "I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but.... I was just talking to Izzy the other day though."
However, he hints that you could see the current incarnation of Gn'R back out on the road soon. "Every time there's a big festival announced, we get rumored to be on there," he says. "But we'll see what happens."
One thing's for sure: Everyone will be watching. STEVE BALTIN

If you heard Axl Rose on one of those MTV awards shows a year or so ago, you'd be a little less excited...he sounded awful.

Their old shit is still badass, though.

Axl is an idiot. The only reason he has rights over the band name "Guns 'N' Roses" is the rest of the band gave into his ridiculous demands and signed the papers just to keep the tour going, else Axl would have thrown a fit and ruined everyone's good time.

Whatever music is released in the future under the name Guns 'N' Roses is not the real band, just an Axl solo project with session musicians -- and therefore it's most likely going to be a load of shit, just like the other shit he released on his own.

Buckethead, Tommy Stinson(of The Replacements), Brian Mantia(of Primus), Richard Fortus(of Love Spit Love), and Robert Finck(of Nine Inch Nails)..are hardly what one would call studio musicians.

Axl may never repeat the former GNR magic, but this group of talent is every bit as talented as the original lineup, if not more.

There may also be some Izzy Stradlin studio work involved, as he is the one former GNR member that has good relations with the lil' looney.

The real reunion of the original GnR(minus Steven Adler due to health condtion) is one Scott Weiland arrest away from happening. If Velvet Revolver has to break-up due to Weliands addictions we could see a GnR reunion tour in about 2010. That tour would sell out every stadium in the country.

looks like Steven Adler is still playing GNR music in a cover band called Adlers Appetite. www.stevenadler.net

guess he really did spend all his money on Mr Brownstone

Interesting link.

From the Q&A:

"Did you ever think about getting back with Duff, Slash, and Izzy to form a new band with new songs and a new singer?"
STEVEN :
That would be nice, but the main goal is to get the five of us brothers back together. That's the main goal!
By "us brothers" he obviously means the original GnR lineup. Let's see. . . Slash and Izzy are still making music together, Steven Adler apparantly is healthy, drumming, an wanting to get back together as a band, Izzy is friendly with Axl...

The big obstacle blocking any musical reunion is the 10 year rift between Axl and Slash. Definitely some issues there!

If, by some twist of fate, Slash and Axl were to reconcile their differences then it'd be time to start getting excited about the band Guns N Roses. But until that happens..

But then even if they were to get back together and start making music, would it be any good? I'm sure it would be good, but would it be good good, Kind of hard to recpature the headspace they were in during the time when, say, this pic was taken:

but maybe a few bottles of Jack Daniels could get them back in the ol' GNR reckless je ne se qua.

Saw them in April 1992 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, show was PHOENOMINAL and i have a VHS tape of it too! 3 hours long, started at like 11:30 at night LOL Sucked for the people who had tix for the next night's show which had to be cancelled on account of Axl's pending arrest on riot charges fromt he previous year's concert in St Louis..

Saw the reformed Guns N Roses in 2002 in Chicago and it was quite good, though not the same as the original...

I remember seeing the "GNR" (Axl + whoever he could find) tour at the FleetCenter in Boston a few years ago on a snowy December night. It was one of the worst concerts I was ever at.

The two opening acts sucked. Then they make everyone sit around until almost 11pm for "GNR" to come out. I could see television monitors near the stage set up with words to the songs on them for Axl to see as he went along. And a good percentage of people walked out before the encores started.

People more or less accepted it, but it sucked. A few weeks before that, I saw a cover band "Mister Brownstone" that was way better than this show was.

If the real GNR can get back together for a tour, it would obviously be way better than this garbage. And as for this "Democracy" album - it's a flop waiting to happen. Velvet Revolver is way better than this watered down crap.

These songs, while a little more techno than i would care for, especially the start of "better" Are awesome to hear, The guy always had one of the most unique voices out there, and as front men go, he is at or near the top of all time.

Guns N Fuckin Roses!!!!!!!
