That surgery sucks very bad. I had mine 8 yrs ago. They placed a piece of mesh in the incision-to prevent it from happening again. I was crawling for the first couple of days, and I couldn't piss. You will be back to normal in a few weeks.

Yeah I found out today my 3 year old daughter is gonna need it. Outpatient surgery. I was shocked to find out. She has them as a natural birth defect. 2 of them; one around here upper groin & another they found in her belly button. Said they must come out for girls due to later in life if they decide to have children.

Tough shit, but I trust in a higher power she'll be fine. Only real fear is anesthesia(think I spelled right) because with kids sometimes they over do it and they don't wake up.

Mine still hurts and now I got another one. Good Luck Ghost. :realtongu . I am curious to know if you were knocked out for the surgery or if they just used a epidural and kept you awake. Man that was weird for me.

2Playsmax, any surgery on any one especially a child is serious.

However, you're daughter will be fine, I'm sure...certain. My wife (34 years old) had hernia surgery when she was very young as well for the same exact reason you speak of....she is fine and we had two fine children (so far) via vaginal birth and all..... No worries, mate! God bless and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers as it breaks my heart to think of any child going through any troubles at all..... tulsa

hey guys, i work in surgery as a nurse and a few tidbits might help...

they dont actually "take out" or remove anything at all. hernia is your intestines pushing thru the abdominal muscles. so they pop them in and sew up the abdomenal wall. very simple in terms of surgery and compared to all the other surgeries done.

ive seen tons and tons of surgeries and along with it anesthesia, and i know its always a risk, rest assured that the anesthesiologists are so careful about who is getting what and how much anesthesia do they require and so on. honestly that wouldnt be my biggest concern and be glad that you can go home that same day. ive seen some horror stories about what goes on when people have to stay in the hospital overnight, or for a few days....thats the scary and dangerous part, in my opinion. i would want to get out asap after surgery.

and as far as inadvertant farting post-operatively, i dont see how this could be because they dont do anything to the inside of your intestines...only thing i could think of is that if some gas and stuff couldnt flow thru right cause of the hernia before surgery, then all the free flow after might let the gases out, but that would be short term, not something that your would have for the rest of your life or something.

hope this insight has helped someone.

long story short: had the surgery about 20 years ago so things could have changed since. they kept me in the hospital overnight, until i could demonstrate the ability to pee. as soon as i did, out i went. Pain was not bad until about 3 days later, then it got so bad that all the drugs in the world couldn't help. Finally called HMO, my surgeon was off, spoke to another who had me come in. took one look, said i had a fluid build up. he drained it, and i gradually felt better.

when i went to see the original surgeon to get my stiches out 6 wks later, i told him what happened. his response: "I could have told you that might happen." My response: "Well, why the eff didn't you???" His response: "Uhhhhh...."

Dude, you just got operated on, let yourself recover!!!!!!

2 years ago I had the operation on my right side and 3 years ago on the left, so the who process is still somewhat fresh in my mind. Both times i was released within about 6 hours of reporting to the hospital. The severe pain actually will get worse over the course of the first 3-4 days, as the local wears off. Then each day gets better and better. Give yourself at least a week before you try to do any driving or prolonged stays on your feet. You will find out for yourself if this is resonable of time to recover( which it wont be!!) and then adjust your recovery time. I would say 3-4 weeks minimum. Enjoy your meds, watch TV, and sleep.

Don't recall any uncontrolled farting but the whole notion is pretty funny..

I agree with the 3-4 weeks minimum. I went back to work after 4 and it was a week too soon. I do not have a wussy desk job though. But yeah it's serious pain for a couple weeks.

There is no limit as to what you can learn on TheRx. BTW-if you have staples-you'll feel 100 times better once they're out. I had them after having a blown up disc fixed-they are hell.
