Why Aren't Women Sports Bettors?

Hardly any are. When I lived in Vegas I noticed that the slot machine use was about equally divided between the genders. So were the blackjack tables. Ditto roulette. Craps tended to be more favored by males.

The race book also was mostly male, but women are often fairly well-represented. But the sports books - ahh!

This is as male as war was for generations. The only women you'd find there are the wives and girlfriends of the men, and most were clearly itching to get back to the slots. In some sports books a few whores seemed to be trolling for winners.

Some years ago, before the Internet exploded, I bought about 2000 names on address labels of sports bettors, to solicit by mail for a small tout service I ran. If I recall correctly, there were maybe three female names on that entire list.

These recollections were brought to the fore by an ABC Primetime tonight, whre they devoted a half hour to a woman (lez, actually) who dressed as a man to infiltrate male preserves, like a bowling league, monastery, etc.

She later concluded that men were very equalitarian and accepting (even tho some suspected she/he was gay, ie a gay male). But she also concluded that men need and want sensitivity and intimacy, but are "conditioned" not to know how to express it.

Excuse me, but this sounds like the usual p c bullshit. Yes, men are "conditoned" not to open up, but it has little to do with societal norms, but rather with evolution, and Nature Blood Red in Tooth and Claw, as a naturlist put it a hundred years ago.

Civilization is but 10 millenia old. Our brains and nervous systems are wired for flight or fight, for stuggle and a necessary brutality. For tens of thousands of years, and several million for our hominid ancestors, sensitivity and intimacy would hve gotten us killed. The whole world was a combat arena. Women, protected by the males, could afford these luxuries as they nurtured the children.

Sports betting, the combination of calculation and on field combat, is a throwback to what our ancestors did to survive. Outthink our enemies, and kill them. It's sublimated in sports betting, but it's there. Welcome to 30000 BC.

The psychic differences between male and female is not some societal plot, some rotten scheme by male chauvinists. The difference is part of our nature. And as the French say, vive la difference!

this was wayyy to cerebral for me to follow. you went from seeing few women in sports betting and finding whores in the sportsbooks trolling for winners to slaughter on the battlefield by men who are conditioned.whaaaat? ive been to vegas many times and i see LOTS of women betting on sports. but face it,this is a male dominated business not geared toward women at all.if a book like bodog considered for a second that there ARE many many female sports bettors they wouldnt have bodog models everywhere you look around the website. but if they did consider women would men be as prevalent if the chippendale dancers were on every page? theyd lose 80% of thier clientele i think.theres more women betting and capping than you think. and posting can be a bit like combat so most will never subject themselves to that. but they are lurking and reading the rx daily.:103631605

Men have always been risk takers. They were the ones who went out and risked their lives hunting buffalo and other dangerous animals while the women raised the children in the safe confines of the cave. It's the same thing with gambling. Men are the ones wired to take risks.

This is a generalization of course. There are many men who are not willing to take risks and there are some women who are willing.

I see plenty of female bettors here in Vegas. They just happen to have lives and do not hang in the books all day. This does not include the NFL which brings both sexes out in droves. Also women are for the most part more selective and are not into bragging about there wins. It only seems like there aren't any but there are more than a few.

Didn't know what a correlated parlay was, as I never bet parlays, then or now. Well, now, yes, but very rarely. But then, no.

If one is handicapping strictly for straight betting, there would be no reason to investigate parlays, correlated or otherwise. One must fail in betting if one does not know what a correlated parlay is? Strange logic.

Hemingway was such an atrocious speller that it took special copy editors with tons of patience to go through his manuscripts with corrections. "So, Ernie, you can't spell worth a shit. What makes you think you can write novels?"

The models I see on sports bet sites, calendars, etc, are skimpily-clad and nubile young women. Which precisely proves my point.

Re touting: the only female sports tout I've ever heard of was Barbara Nathan. And I've not heard of her for years.

Very few women bet sports. Again, 3 names on a list of 2000. In general, cerebral gaming is the province of the male. The modern compulsive egalitarianism which wants to trumpet every exception is understandable. But still full of it. Anyone who wears the same kind of blinders when figuring which games to bet is going to make a bookie very happy indeed.

I can state flatly that women cannot throw overhand. For millenia males hunted with rocks and spears, which to be effective required overhand throws. Eventually, the necessity became a birthright.

But of course, a few, very few, women can throw effectively overhand. A few, very few, may also be dopng the stats and betting sports. There are also human beings in institutions with less intelligence than dogs and cats. Doesn't mean that dogs and cats in general have higher IQs than people.

Highlighting exceptions makes one feel good, part of the mass. I understand the compulsion. If it feels good, go for it!

I also think it has something to do with risk-taking. And I'm not saying men are braver or smarter for being risk-takers (we're probably dumber for being risk takers). But the risk seems inherently appealing to men, moreso than women.

But it could also very well be that men are socialized into competitive sports more than women and, thus, are more inclined to find avenues and opportunities for wagering on competitive sports than are most women.

Again, we are speaking in generalities here, there are always exceptions.

Barbara Nathan. Wow. have I grown so old that I could forget such a name. I will have to go to the old guard on this one as she had an interesting story to say the least.

When she calls some of the local makers there, they pay attention as she had a run in the college baskets once that Almost bankrupt 6 makes in an around that part of the country!
