BOSTON (Ticker) - It looks like the Boston Red Sox finally have been able to land Coco Crisp from the Cleveland Indians.
According to a report in the Boston Herald, the Red Sox have agreed in principle on a trade that will bring the outfielder to Fenway Park for third baseman Andy Marte and righthander Guillermo Mota.
The newspaper reported the deal was agreed to a few days ago under a condition that the Indians were able to acquire another outfielder to replace Crisp - presumably Jason Michaels of the Philadelphia Phillies.

</NOSCRIPT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>It was reported that the Indians were going to send either lefthander Arthur Rhodes or righthander Rafael Betancourt to the Phillies for the outfielder.
The Herald also reported that Boston is about to sign free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has hit .245 with 81 homers and 375 RBI in eight seasons with the Florida Marlins. The 28-year-old was an All-Star in 1997 and is considered a solid defensive player.
Since Johnny Damon signed with the New York Yankees last month, center field and a leadoff hitter has become a top priority for the 2004 world champions. Crisp could fill both voids.
Although he played mostly left field for the Indians last season, Crisp came up through the organization as a center fielder.

The switch-hitter batted .300 with 42 doubles, 16 homers and 69 RBI in 145 games in 2005. He had 44 walks against 81 strikeouts in 594 at-bats and posted a .345 on-base percentage. The 26-year-old hit .324 with 11 homers against righthanders and .252 with five homers against lefthanders.

In Marte, whom Boston acquired from Atlanta in December for shortstop Edgar Renteria, the Indians are getting one of the top hitting prospects in the game.
While being among the youngest players in each league he has appeared, Marte has averaged .280, 32 doubles and 20 homers over four full seasons in the minors. The 22-year-old hit .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI in 109 games at Class AAA Richmond of the International League last season.

In 24 games for Atlanta, Marte hit just .140 with four RBI in 57 at-bats.
Mota, a reliable power pitcher who was acquired from Florida in the Josh Beckett trade in November, was 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 56 games in 2005. In seven seasons, the 32-year-old is 22-24 with a 3.61 ERA and seven saves.

FUCK.

That is an excellent pickup for the RedSox. That guy's plate skills are improving in leaps and bounds. Boston will encourage him to just get on base, any way possible. He already has better range and arm than Damon in the Outfield. The Redsox are looking very smart. Stockpiling strong bullpen arms, hoping to hit the jackpot also will work out.

Excellent Addition

This is a solid move by Boston.:103631605 I can tell you one team that would like to have him back and that is the Cardinals...

They drafted him, he was their minor league player of the year, and then was sent to the Indians in the Chuck Finley deal. I personally always liked Covelli, and the Cardinals always wonder why they are so old and have to sign guys like Juan Encarnacion...

I'm gonna go out on a small limb and say Crisp is just about as good as Damon at this point....pretty surprising that the Indians would deal him.

bust

they do need a center fielder and all, but to give up marte and mota is no good. crisp is average and inconsistent and no johnny damon. meanwhile your giving up one of the better set up guys in the league and a troy glaus in waiting. as a red sox fan this deal pisses me off.

I'm definatly siked. Just when I think the ship is sinking there's no story this year the drama is stail blah blah. They go grab Theo back and Sign Coco.

Make no mistake, all of RSN was bummed about about Jhonny did. But let's not forget how old Jhonny was and what kind of money he was asking for. Plus were'nt you guys getting sick of the girl fans being all over him. Well, I guess now they can fantasize about him and Jeter except now the uniforms will match.

How can you be diappointed giving up Marte and Mota when we just got them??
Crisp is NEEDED is centerfield. Alex Gonzalez is next to come at short. Bully must be bolstered-but lineup is shaping up very nice. Loretta is the most underated move.

Why does Clev give away Crisp to the Red Sox of all people. The team that just beat THEM out of the WC last year. Cleveland is a nice young team that was on the rise with Cripo, very surprising, unless Cleve gets cash in the final deal, they got fleeced.

Not only that, but one would think that Crisp is only going to get better, where Damon is on the downside of his career.

Sox look smarter all the time. I don't miss the old days when the off season consisted of waiting to see which past his prime right handed power hitter they would drag in.

I will preface this by saying there is not a bigger Tribe fan on the planet than me....My dad and I had season tickets from 91 to 02.....i miss about 2 games per year now a days(watch em on the extra innings now)

Couple of points that need to be made.

#1 Coco is a solid leadoff batter/number 2 batter...

#2 Coco is not and I mean NOT a solid center fielder...gets horrible reads and makes poor decisions when taking a route to the ball....this is the reason Grady was our center fielder.

#3 Coco lacks the power you would like to see from a corner OF.....or he is no Ichiro or Gwynn...as for as speed or average.

#4 The Indians are as deep as anyone in baseball with corner outfielders in the minors...ala Brad Snyder, Franklin Gutierrez, Trevor Crowe, Jason Cooper, Ben Fransisco....just to name a few...all are highly rated....especially Gutierrez.

#5 This will enable the tribe to fill the only hole they have in their organization and that is 3rd base....and to land this kid would be something special....number one rated 3rd base prospect in all of baseball.

IF and I do mean IF this deal goes down...I believe this deal will benefit both teams......but mark my words this Marte has a bigger upside than coco ever had....Period. Will the Indians miss a beat without Coco....NO. If anything I believe their line-up as a whole gets better and will have more pop......moving Ronnie to the 2 whole will be a good fit.

Oh come on. I dont care if he is good or not. It's just cool to have a guy named 'COCO CRISP' on your team. This foills a void the sox have had since we no longer had POKEY REESE.

Crisp is a 1 year fix until Jacoby Ellsbury is ready to take over CF

Ellsbury is the real deal and he will be fast tracked through farm system, he gives Sox a true lead off hitter who has unreal speed

Nice angle Rob....with a name like that anything he does on the field is just gravy.
