-->The latest addition to Houston's professional sports landscape finally has a name, and the team is making it official today. <!-- adPro.mpl: (/disp/story.mpl/sports) (elapsed 0.207 milli) (Wed Jan 25 15:02:06 2006) --><!-- DART AdSpace 300x250 - Sports - Story --><!-- /DART AdSpace -->

The city's Major League Soccer team will be known as Houston 1836. The team colors will be white, orange and blue.

The name's main reference is the year Houston was founded by John and Augustus Allen on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. It also marks the year Texas declared its independence from Mexico, the Battle of the Alamo and the defeat of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican army at the hands of General Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto during the Texas Revolution.
The name first surfaced as one of 13 choices in a "Name the Team Sweepstakes" held through Jan. 6 after franchise owner Anschutz Entertainment Group relocated the team formerly known as the Earthquakes from San Jose, Calif., in early December. European tradition, sort of Most popular in Europe, particularly Germany, the style of naming a team after a year is considered a soccer staple. German teams such as Hannover 96 (1896), Bayer 04 Leverkusen, FC Schalke 04 (both 1904) and FSV Mainz 05 (1905) are among the most popular in Europe. The style migrated to other parts of the world, including Latin America, in the early 1900s

I like the After Christ idea with AC.

Some needs to add AC to their name

I like the logo and te name. I also think that Houston missed a MLS team. With all the Mexicans and other foreigners working in the oil industry the fan base should be large enough.

AC like in After Christ or Associazione Calcio?

Are you bloody kidding me? In Europe the year after a team is usually the year THE TEAM was founded, not the city. LOL.

Houston 2006 doesn't have a good ring to it either... Then they'd have to change the horse into a SUV

Not quiet, the article is trying to draw a comparison between Houston's name and the names of European clubs and the point it makes is: "That's how they do it in European soccer.".
That's what my comment refered to.
They do it this way, but for different reasons. You don't see clubs called "BlaBla 1987"(unless the name BlaBla is already taken). Most clubs that have years behind their names have already celebrated or are close to celebrating their first century and have some history they're proud of.
GL to Houston with their new name, I like it, but don't try to say it's been chosen cause of an existing soccer convention to name teams that way. It will be misleading to anyone who follows soccer closely.

PS: About the misleading part. When I first read the title, I thought :"Shit, how can they have a soccer club that old in the States???"

Well spoken. I didnt take the article above as trying to copy Euro clubs names and the way they name their clubs.

Hey at least I know when Houston was Born...didnt remeber that fact from Grade School...
