I'm 36. Like many my age, I grew up worshiping Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Ed "Too-Tall Jones," Drew Pearson, Robert Newhouse, etc. I loved the Cowboys. They were on TV every Sunday even though we only got 4 channels back then (that was a big deal!).

Had my dad ever died, I wanted Tom Landry to adopt me. The man was the paragon of class, dignity and "keeping your cool." He didn't yell at his players or whine to the refs about bad calls. He was likely the most prolific innovator of the game, EVER. He invented the nickel and dime defenses. Then once everyone had copied that scheme, he invented complex offensive schemes (shotgun formation, man-in-motion) to pick them apart.

The Cowboys were a powerhouse through the 70s and early 80s, but years and years of getting low draft picks caught up with them, and they finally had some (gulp!) LOSING seasons.

When Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys, his first order of bidness was to commandeer a helicopter, fly out to a golf course where Landry was playing, and personally fire him on the spot. What a classless way to treat a coaching legend.

After I heard that story, I realized that the Cowboys I grew up with were no more, and I haven't pulled for them since unless I had $$ on them.

Anyone else grow up a Cowboy fan? Anyone else love coach Landry? I'm sure some arch-rival Steeler/Bradshaw fans will chime in!

I'm 37 and never liked the Cowboys...in fact hated them.

So I love Jerry Jones because as long as he owns the Cowboys they will never win another Super Bowl:toast:

I can see why people would have hated the Boys..."America's Team," over exposed, over hyped, over analyzed, shoved down your throat...kind of like the Patriots today. I guess I was young enough to fall for all the hype, and I loved watching them win, sometimes in dramatic comeback fashion.

I didn't like the Steelers because they were the competition, but I loved watchin Lynn Swan, Franco Harris, John Stallworth & Mean Joe Green play.

Did you see that show on HBO 2 seasons ago that chronicled the Cowboys training camp when Dave Campo was coach? Every time Jones was on there, it made me sick. He was so obviously aware that he was on camera, he was sticky sweet to everyone and tried to come off as a nice guy with a heart.

Also, maxdemo, I'll bet even you had some respect for Landry, even if you didn't like the Cowboys.

I do have respect for Tom L. but living in Houston during those years made you either a Cowboy lover or Hater...and I was a hater. Dont get me wrong the Cowboys were good and one of the best teams in NFL history...but I still hated them:toast:

Loved that but they could never get by Pittsburg or we would have played Dallas in the Super Bowl. And when they blew that 35 point lead vs Buffalo I was happy to see the Oilers move to Buffalo

Jerry Jones

You ought to have to live in Big D and have to listen to him on Sports Radio three or four times a week. It makes you nausaus. He reminds me of those faith healers you see on T.V. And ever since his face lift he looks and acts even more like a clown. My wife and i eat out quite a bit and run into him about once a month at our favorite steak house. He really demands and expects everyone from the parking attendant to the waiters to really bow down. He couldn!t hold Tom Landrys jock strap .

I grew up with the Cowboys too. Huge fan then and now. Tom will forever be the man. He is beyond class .....untouchable. His family and my brother-n-law's family are close. He hosted a dinner party one night before my sister got married. I was a freshman and my brother was a senior. I remember Coach Landry talking to us about football and such. That was unreal.

I do agree it was time for a change and Jerry f---ed up, but understand it was a hard thing to do no matter how you fire him. There is no owner that wants to win more than Jerry Jones. He gives everything. The NFL is lucky they have a salary cap or they would out spend everyone to have the best players (see Yankees). If the 90's team continued without free agency, they would have had 5-6 Superbowls. I can see where others think Jerry is a sneaky-snake. I will always be pissed alittle at how he handled Coach Landry. I will always be glad he bought the team and will like it when Stephen Jones takes over down the road.

Hi to all,,,
I have a Tom Landry story,,,,

I am 35,, and LOVEEEE the cowboys (with tom)

when I was 19 my Pops hooked me up with a SWEET cake job with Amoco driving a Van and a small trailer with Audio visual equipment to all of the Subsidiaries of amoco,,,, (the Job lasted a year) ,,, the group that produced our equipment was located in Denton TX,,, so the job began with a 1 week training on the equipment and Driving the sheet around,,,

well,, were else would be the best place to drive it??? at the Cowboys Stadium!!! well,, that Got SQUASHED in about 20 minutes as we all were training,,, lol,,, one of the security jerkoffs showed up to give us the shake down,,, Asking " who gave Yall the authorization to Drive here" and I told the guy TOM ,,, my Uncle Tom Landry,,,, the security guard got Google eyed,,,, I knew I had to blow him out of the water otherwise he would throw us out,,, so i told him "yes,,, my uncle Tom is here now in the stadium and were going out to lunch in the next hour,,,

of course he attempted to check out my story,,, TOM said,,,, my NEPHEW is HERE????? Send him up!!

so he shut the F up,,,,lol,,, I didnt know what to do,,,,, I got scared,, we finished our training,, and we left,,, ugh,,,, I was 19,,,, and afraid to be arrested,,,, lol

National columnist: Jerry Jones is a 'fool running his team into eternal mediocrity

<!--set group's style class and style id to the wrapper of main contents-->It seems like every time an owner of a sports team gets publicly criticized, one name always gets brought up for comparison: Jerry Jones.
The Cowboys owner has been ridiculed by the media because of his stubbornness, high visibility, and lack of success with the team in recent years.
Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports recently wrote an article destroying new Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry for how he handled the Jason Kidd situation.
Doyel calls Lasry 'embarrassing' and 'a meddler.' He compares Lasry to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones because he says both believe 'they are smarter and know better than everyone else.'
"Smartest guys in the room never realize their mistake, assuming they ever realize their mistake, until it's too late," Doyel wrote. "Look at Jerry Jones, another self-made billionaire who bought America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys, installed himself as general manager and is stuck with a fool running his team into eternal mediocrity.
"Because that fool owns the team and thinks his genius for business deals extends to this silly football thing. And it doesn't. One is not the other. Business may well be harder than sports, but being great at business has no bearing on a person's ability to maneuver a sports franchise."
Doyel goes on to list Memphis Grizzles owner Robert Pera and New York Knicks owner James Dolan in the same category as Jones and Lasry. He calls them 'the wrong kind of owner' because they are 'the losing kind' who can be 'an occupational hazard.'
Jones, who purchased the team in 1989, won the Super Bowl in 1992, 1993, and 1995 with the Cowboys. However, the team has finished 8-8 for three straight seasons and hasn't made the playoffs since 2009.
The Cowboys have also been through seven different coaches since Jones fired the team's first coach, Tom Landry, in 1988.

jones may not of helped his team to be a powerhouse on the field, but
with his new stadium their bottom line is the envy of every other NHL
franchise. as a general rule, if a team's owner and general manager
are the same, it is difficult to win. that is especially true today as most
organizations have more people, more talent, and better tools to
evaluate the athletes. with all the money the cowboys generate and
the owner's desire to win, it really takes a lot of bad luck or bad decisions
for them NOT to win.
