The magical $50 million Super Bowl wagering barrier first was broken in Nevada 14 years ago thanks in no small part to Michael Gaughan, owner of the Barbary Coast and Gold Coast hotels. That's when he willingly posted a 'middle' - the very bane of every bookmaker's existence - on Super Bowl XXVI.

These days, handles of more than $70 million on the game are common in Nevada. There are estimates that more than $2 billion is wagered at betting locations around the globe.

$2 billion -- what an ouch for bookies if the games does fall four.

Hardly anyone remembers this but the very last play of that game Buffalo had a man open downfield but Kelly overthrew him. It would have been a touchdown as most players starting running off the field after the snap.

Capitan I wondered that myself. It seems like he did that after the Coast did but I am to young to remember if he did that earlier or not. Maybe the San Fran/Cinncy bowl where he took the million from Stupak?

No matter if you liked or hated him Gene had some big balls! I'm pretty sure it was before, but I believe those brain cells were surrepticously (sp) taken from me! :lolBIG:

Its likely he did it privately if he did as he did not turn down many bets. Its funny how so very few people in the culture today know who we are even talking about Cap'n. The history of it all is fadeing fast my friend.

Frantze, Martin and all those guys used to get together for lunch at that deli over off of Sahara! Remember when there were no female dealers on the craps table and you didn't have to ask if you wanted to smoke?

I don't get it. Did other books at that time not allow people to buy the half point for 10 cents? :icon_conf

I know the Deli you are talking about but have not been in years. Why I do not know as its not far from the GBC. They had female dealers by the time I got here but not many. For the person who asked the half point question.
The Gaughn promo had never been done at a national level on the most bet game. They for 2 weeks straight took bets on both sides at the same time for
the game effectively doubling there exposure. This would include there familys other properties in town at the time. Jackie Gaughn is a flat demi god here and has the pockets to cover a middle. Its why they did it in the end.

Michael Gaughan is a very sharp and classy man, and I remember the buzz it generated, but that decision I'm guessing, had been made after a serious pow-wow with Pittsburgh Jack, Don, and Company..that vouched for a probable solid Skins win?..I'd be surprised if he did it without consultation.

Classy outfit..Gaughans, Barbary, Orleans, PJF, Don Williams,etc..old-school!

Celebrity Deli..they were true Knights Of The Roundtable..they were there for lunch most every day...as were many Seaboard wiseguys and Vegas pros.

That was a great marketing tool. Alot of publicity for his casinos when Gaughn posted that line.

This is a wishful thinking at least flatout lie at most. Show me the research where you put out this number from and it better has some solid data to back it up, otherwise I'm gonna hazard a guess it's right out of somebody's ass.

Man Horseshoe do I ever miss celebrity deli. I live in the neighborhood and use to go there quite a bit. Such names you bring out of the past there. I am really the baby of the bunch as far as the old school crowd but I caught many in there last great years and was around for much as I lived to live the life in those days and then some. I am likely the only person under the age of 40 today who knows what you are talking about or truly cares. All of it is lost
on the generation of today. I hurt for them in this regard. Scott S. is writing a book and thats as close as they will ever get to knowing.

Zee, the Gaming Control Board out here in Nevada puts out the numbers you say are made up. Its simple accounting and no one has a reason to lie.
