For me it's the empty net goal in hockey, nothing quite compares to losing an under, or a +1.5 bet because a goal scores with 2 seconds left on an unguarded net.

I understand pulling the goalie, but those hurt real bad !

Great thread, Doug and I am sure you will have some good responses to this one. The one you mentioned is a killer with hockey unders.

Everyone knows it takes a lot of courage as it is to bet a hockey under because every goal scored makes you feel terrible. But the end of the game for unders is a killer for both empty net goals and for teams scoring a game tying goal with six skaters against 5 and sending the game into overtime - where another goal of course comes.

For me, I would say the worst way to lose is back door final shots in basketball. Meaningless shots at the buzzer that end up affecting the spread or total, especially after having a big lead at halftime and such. Most of the time, these tend to even out over the long run to help or hurt but it's the worst feeling when you lose from it.

There's something unique about empty net, the basketball player has to make the 28 foot shot, a child could put a puck in an empty net from 80 feet.

The empty net is just so easy !

A meaningless 3 pointer from some walk on white guy. This coming just after the player from my team misses an uncontested lay up because he thinks he's in the slam dunk competiton. I lost a game like this a few years back.

How about the intentional safety to avoid a blocked punt that turns a winner into a loser?

Those are brutal...I think I'm 2-1 lifeftime on those.

I remember a game where Barry Sanders broke a long 60-70 yard run on SNF, they caught him from behind at the 1 yard line, Detroit could not run out the clock but Wayne Fontes elected to sneak it into the line 4 times...and turn it over on downs with just 30 seconds left.

For me it would be the walk off homer, especially when you're watching it on the scoreline...it's such a sudden death :pucking:

Once had USC +7.5....game goes into OT....winner for sure. ASU scores a TD; no big deal. Brad Otten then throws a pick that is returned for a TD that they counted...SC players didn't even try to tackle him....sigh.

Oh I had that one too Barney...that one is still talked about around here....what made it worse for me, I was listening to it on TV (had the squiggly line, it was a PPV game) try listening to Keith Jackson call that last play, if I'm not mistaken though it was a fumble recovery, there was a controversy as to whether the QB threw the ball or fumbled it.

How about an onside kick that gets returned for a touchdown? Or maybe having 2 of them in the same game when you have the 2nd-half under like what happened in the UCLA game this year.

I don't agree with the Hockey one..because it's too much a part of the game.

I'm with the Intentional Safety that kills the spread because that's one you only get once or twice a season.

A meaningless foul in a hoops game where you have the dog and the shooter goes to the line, hits two and you lose by 1.

heartbreaking way to lose...

My 15 yr old boy was playing in a midwest boys Tennis tournament this weekend..64 draw......He is playing the #8 seed in the second round....He loses first set 6-2 ..then down 4-0 in second set.....comes back to win second set 6-4.....Third set he falls behind immediately 3-0.....Takes the lead 5-4 and is serving for the match but gets broke...opponent holds and he holds to go into the 7 pt third set tiebreak.....He falls behind 4-0 in the tiebreak...then down 5-2....wins the tie break 7-5......have to say that is tough loss for opponent...no?

You're right. I guess my mind was trying to reduce the pain. The fumble recovery was much worse. I do remember SC guys not tryong to tackle him though...

Nope. I'm in Wisconsin, otherwise I would have taken you up on your offer.
