3 MVPs missing from Super Bowl tribute

3-time winner Montana reportedly wanted $100,000

DETROIT - Quarterbacks Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw were conspicuously absent when the NFL showcased the Most Valuable Players from the first 39 Super Bowls during pre-game ceremonies in Detroit on Sunday.

Montana, the former signal caller for the San Francisco 49ers and the only three-time Super Bowl MVP, apparently turned down the invitation because he wanted $100,000, not the $1,000 the NFL was offering, according to reports from Newsday and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Bradshaw decided to stay home, and former Miami Dolphins MVP Jake Scott — also missing from the ceremony — was traveling in Australia.

The NFL reportedly provided each of the former MVPs $1,000 for incidental expenses while in Detroit, along with other amenities such as plane tickets, car rental and game tickets.

When the league balked at Montana's demands, the quarterback declined to take part in the tribute.

Although Bradshaw told league officials that he wanted to be with his family, The Chronicle reported the former Steelers quarterback also took issue with the amount the NFL was willing to pay for an appearance in the pre-game ceremonies.

Bradshaw, through a representative, denied the Chronicle's report that there was a dispute over money.

Let me steal something I heard on Rome is burning.

Joe Montana is the face of the game. He should be there for free.

Yea, another black eye...the bioggest two names in Super Bowl history, don't show up, real nice.

Bradshaw had the chance to come home to his fans, Montana coming home to his first Super Bowl winning performance, cannot believe they didn't show.

They should have done it for free.

How does a player like Joe Montana not show up?

Joe Montana was in detroit on friday, no excuse.

Bradshaw (I already knew this) has been battling depression almost his whole life. (It's not easy) They say he feels a bit estranged from the Pitt community.

I can understand Terry wanting to be with his family on the day his Steelers are in the SB.

But you know what..........if they were not going to get EVERY LIVING former MVP to do this, the NFL should have given the ax to the entire idea.

BART STARR showed up though, that was the most important thing.....:103631605

I'm shocked at Montana. I think even Pete Rose would not be this bad.

The question is WHY wasn't Terry AND fam in Detroit in support of Steelers hoping to bring trophy back home? That's the frikkin question folks! Suspect that it was absolutely about the $$$$ -- as in, What? only $1000 for ME, the Great Montana! What an insult! Don't like Bradshaw anyway , never have - probably never will, complete jerk and cannot stomach him on tv or any other venue. He probably was rooting for Seattle, right? Doesn't want to share that Steelers Glory. This is pissing me off the more I think about it ----> In fairness to all, chances are there will be a couple that don't show for whatever reason. Too bad the reason is about the money. This won't help the perception that pro athletes are greedy, self-absorbed A-holes

I am not sure why terry would need to be with his family to watch a superbowl. If anything it would make sense for him to be with his steeler's family.

How long does one "owe" the world?
The rest of their lives?
When is one finally free of that "You have to give something back" mentality?

Just asking...............

This was a tribute to SB MVP's I think it should of been a honor for them to be there.

It wasn't like they were asking them to sign autographs for 2 hours just wanted to honor them as former SB MVP and walk on the field before the game

hmm, how about attending 1 super bowl ceremony when they celebrate the last 40 superbowl MVPs? is it that tough to walk on the field and act like you have class like steve young and bart starr?? Hell even Joe Namath wasn't so full of himself to ask for more money.

No one is asking joe montana to go out there and take a hit from ray lewis, they are asking him to take a stroll.

Bradshaw doesnt feel estranged from the Steeler community anymore.

He went back and had a real nice " Terry Bradshaw day " a few years back.

I have lost some respect for those 2 .

Which I'm sure will have them up nights for a while..

The NFL has so much scratch they should have paid all 39 100K and not sweated it. Big business, yo! I'm sure there's at least three sides or more to this story. :toast:
