Controversial call in the Super Bowl:

1. Ben’s Touchdown
Personally, I haven't seen anything conclusive to say that it was either definitely either a touchdown or that it wasn't a touchdown. What we do know is that the ball either crossed the plain of the end zone by a millimeter or it missed by a millimeter. How can anyone fault the line judge for a call that is that close and where there was no evidence to overturn it?

In the following photos, a lot of people confuse Ben's forearm with the ball. The ball may have been in, but it is behind his arm.

In addition, had the Line Judge ruled the ball down at the one inch line, the Steelers had 4th down and they stated that they would have gone for it. They were 100% in 4th and goal this year.

2. Offensive Pass Interference call
That was an easy call as the receiver gained separation by pushing out with his arm. You don't have to move the defensive back to be called for OPI. Remember, the offensive player has the responsibility of avoiding the defensive player.

Is there any doubt. The controversy surrounding this play surprises me the most, especially since it happened right in front of the official and for a touchdown.

3. Holding penalty on Haggins
The rules for offensive holding have a number of caveats, one of which (Rule 3-3 b) is that "if a blocker, after the initial forward thrust of his arms, does not immediately work to bring his hands on and inside the opponents frame," it is holding. In this case, I believe that the holding was up around the neck and shoulder area, he never brought his hands back inside the frame of the pass rusher, and, in Bill Leavy's judgement, and it prevented the pass rusher from making a play on the QB.

Doesn't look like the blocker's arm are inside of Haggin's frame to me.

All of this controversy is a lot about nothing. The truth will set us free.

No question he scored on that play.

His progress was clearly not completed in the pictures shown. Thus, since he was still going forward & toward the EZ, how can anyone honestly say he did not score?

It was a close play, but the sideline official correctly called the play after a slight hesitation. It didnt look the best, but that play was not among the many officiating mistakes during Super Bowl.

Seahags lost...nuff said.

It wasnt the first NFL game that was rigged, and certainly not the last.

Anyone who still believes all these games are honest, is very naive and lives in a different world than I have been living.

Just HOW was the game rigged and by who? I assume you mean the officials.

If so, why? Was it an order from the league to let the Steelers win for Bettis or did the refs have money on it?

I would say one or more officials had some coin on this game as they often do.

Suprised they chose the widest viewed game of the year, but several calls during the game would cause even the most naive gamblers to wonder.

BTW, I had Pittsburgh, so not flaming about Pitt getting several calls in their favor.

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

Somebody's awfully insecure about the outcome. Maybe you should start 5 or 6 more threads?

I thought the pass rusher was offsides to begin with, do you have that clip? Do you have the clip of Ben calling time AFTER the 00 on the play clock?

thanks in advance

These pictures will only inflame the controversy.

All these calls are being disputed and questioned if they were legitimate calls or the right call by the ref. It is not clear cut. It could have went either way. It could have been a call, or no call. They were mariginal calls. People aren't blind. Close calls are marginal calls.

Every single marginal call went against the Seahawks. Calls that took points off the scoreboard against Seattle, and calls that put points on the scoreboard for Pittsburgh.

That Rothlisberger TD is gonna be a classic arguement that the NFL game is fixed.

I believe the rule is the ball must break the plane of the goal line for it to be ruled a touchdown. I would assume this means the official must actually see the ball break the plane of the goal line for it to be a touchdown.

On the replys, I could not even see the ball. It was close, but the ball was tucked under his arm hidden. Don't know what the offical saw for him to signal 4th down, then TD after, changing his mind.

Personally speaking, I will not look at the NFL the same way from now on. Probably the most corrupt league out of the major sports leagues.

i know this has been hashed over ad nauseum. i haven't read all the threads, so i don't know if this has been brought up. in the 1st half, randal-el, just got hammered returning a punt. he fumbled, but you couldn't get a real look at just what happened. as they went to a commercial, they showed a shot of him writhing in pain. i was afraid he wasn't going to get up & was seriously hurt. anyways, after the commericial they never did show the replay. i've never read anything abt it in the papers, nor heard anything abt it on talk radio. i just felt that was shaky, considering all the cameras. anyone else remember, or was i hallucinating?
