Source: Sosa would rather retire than 'beg for a spot'

MIAMI -- Sammy Sosa is seriously considering retiring from baseball instead of accepting an offer from the Washington Nationals, a source close to the player told ESPNdeportes.com

Sosa has not made a decision regarding the contract offer from Washington, which is a non-guaranteed, one-year pact for $500,000.
"Sammy doesn't think of himself as someone who has to beg for a spot on a big league roster," said the source.
Washington's offer is the only one the Dominican slugger and potential Hall of Famer has received this winter.
With 588 career home runs, Sosa is the all-time leader among Latin American players. He had three years of 60 or more home runs between 1998 and 2001 as a Cub, becoming enormously popular in Chicago and throughout baseball.
However, injuries and some bad publicity, including the discovery of a corked bat in 2003, have affected his legacy and market value.
"Sammy wants to get to 600 home runs, but he's not willing to humiliate himself to keep playing. He feels that the lack of interest in his services this winter constitutes a humiliation," added the source.
Although the team has not set a deadline for a decision by Sosa, the Nationals would like to have the situation resolved before pitchers and catchers report to spring training on February 18. Washington originally only offered a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.
Sosa is taking his time to mull the decision, consulting with family and friends. Some have encouraged him to continue playing, while others have suggested he leave baseball.
Sosa, 37, was released by the Orioles after a disappointing 2005, when he hit .221 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 102 games.
The "Caribbean Bambino" was affected by various injuries last year, when he made $17 millon in the last season of a five-year deal he signed with Chicago in 2002. Baltimore declined a $18 million option for 2006. The Nationals see Sosa as an insurance policy entering spring training, in case Jose Guillen's shoulder does not heal as quickly as they would like, and also with Alfonso Soriano's apparent refusal to switch from the infield to the outfield.

No doubt steroids made him millions, and that is how he will be remembered--except for Cub fans who kissed his ass every second he was in Chicago. Just vote no for the hall of fame

that whole sosa / mcgwire run back in 98 ( i think it was 98 ) was the biggest rip off in the last 50 years of sports..

He should have enough money to open up his own HOF and have himself, Palmerio and Rose go in on the first ballot

He wants to hit 600 home runs , however, if he played this year he still might not make it, he should just retire.

325 home runs tops without drugs.

250 home runs without drugs and without Wrigley

I still remember when he went off on a SI reporter that asked him if he would be willing to take a blood test for steroids before there was mandatory testing. If I recall correctly, his response was "what are you trying to do, get me in trouble?" Average player at best, a complete adventure in the outfield. Retire and go away.

Don't love him at all, but you guys are downplaying his accomplishments a bit much. Steroids or no steroids, his run from '98-'01 was crazy good.

I don't think he can be left out of the HOF. Numbers are just too good.

just my opinion but, if baseball wants to send a message about how serious steriods are, they need to keep sosa, bonds, mcgwire & palmiero out of the hall. they took a hard line stand on pete rose and they should do the same here.

I personally believe 99% that Sosa took steroids BUT it is also 100% conjecture as he's never been caught or officially implicated with it whatsoever. So at the same time it's rather unfair to make assumptions and lump him in. Palmeiro of course is a different story.

That was Rick Riley who asked him that. The thing I got out of that whole conversation as a young sports journalist learning is to leave your steroid question for the end of the interview.

He needs another 12 homers for HOF certainty.

The entire Baseball/Steroids controversy kind of cracks me up. A lot of people are pissed off by the fact baseball players took steroids or other illigal performance enhancement drugs, but don't think twice about how many football players have and still do, hall of famers to boot. Even basketball players.

Just the fact the NFL claims innocence because it has a steroid testing program should raise a red flag. Are you kidding me? Tell me you don't believe that bullshit. The average offensive linemen has gained over 50 pounds in the past 10 years! I'd be willing to bet over 75% of current NFL players have taken steroids, and not just before they got to the NFL.

Bottom line is that steroid use is rampant in professional sports. It ain't going away until they test every guy on every team once a week.

As for baseball, I totally understand the "hallowed" records bit. But there was more to the outbreak of homeruns in the late 1990's than just steroids. Smaller fields, bad pitching, and without a doubt, juiced baseballs. That's why guys like like Steve Finley and Luis Gonzalez who would normally hit 25 to 30 HRs were hitting 40's or high 50's.

You know, I've got no issue if Baseball wants to put an asterisk by these modern players and call it the "steroid" era. So long that they put an asterisk by every record held by Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Joe Dimaggio, and every other player that still holds a record before 1947 and call it the "Whites Only" era.

Steroids were legal and I say should still be legal! Hell, as many pitchers as sluggers are taking steroids - let 'em have as many as they want! Why not?
