Mike Davis has resigned as coach at Indiana but will stay on for the remainder of the season, a source in the IU athletic department with knowledge of Davis' situation told SI.com. The source added that the university hopes to have a news conference in Bloomington to discuss details of Davis' termination as early as Thursday.

According to the source, Davis informed Indiana officials of his decision more than a week ago and Davis' attorney and the university subsequently negotiated the terms of his departure, which were finalized this week.

Davis' resignation brings an abrupt end to his turbulent six-year tenure as Indiana's head coach. He spent three years as an assistant before taking over the program after Bob Knight was fired in September 2000. Davis led the Hoosiers to the NCAA championship game in 2002, where they lost to Maryland, but his support among fans and boosters plummeted as IU failed to qualifty for the NCAA the last two years.

Hoosier fans are funny. A fan on another message board wants Matta to leave OSU to come coach the Hoosiers and bring Oden and Conley with him.

And the replies are to the extent of "that would be cool" " you think IU can pull it off?? that would rock!!!"

If the Hoosiers do as Davis said and hire "one of their own", then there are quite a few with coaching experience to go after.

Sure would be good timing, with Tex Tech struggling this year...

But unfortunately, i dont think it could ever happen...:cryingcry

Look for Alford to make the move....the "chosen" words of Davis when announcing they needed one of "their own" clearly paved the way for excitement about Alford....however a "long shot" might be Pat Knight, to try and get the name back, and try to "mend" some fences....

Good for Davis. It was time for him to move on last year and I don't why he wanted to stay somewhere he's clearly not wanted. Bring in Steve Alford with his dinosaur offense and have him turn around the program :puppy: Let's see if the new coach can get them to the NCAA championship game next season.

I hope Knight goes back to IU. Knight-Bashing is one of my favorite pastimes. Too hard to follow at TT. I'm sure Iowa would not cry too much if Alford left for the IU job. The Iowa job is better than the Indiana job anyways because of the Knight factor.

I'll never forget when Davis lost us a huge game against UK by running out in the middle of the floor and getting T'd up in a tie game with 20 seconds left

Also, his championship run had NOTHING to do with him. That team was coached by the seniors and caught absolute fire from 3 in the tourny. The upset over #1 overall seed Duke after trailing by 20 at halftime is still my all time favorite indiana game.
