when he announces he's done coaching basketball?

I was just watching the espn sportscentury stuff, it was about Bob Knight and they said he told Red Auerbach to draft a player that was paralyzed from an auto accident in the 10th round. That's pretty deep, didnt know how deep he really was.

The player was Landon Turner, a surefire 1st round pick before he got injured. Coach Knight got him started in motivational speaking and he is a success today. My brother has hung out with him a few times and says he is a great great guy, even offering tickets and such to my brother. He still goes to many IU games.

He's a terrific coach...he's just not for everyone. It takes a certain type of player to be able to play for him. You've gotta be a tough-minded individual who doesn't take things so personally. If you're willing to be disciplined and take constructive criticism(no matter how malicious it may come off as), you'll become a better player. As a coach, he's simply one of the best ever.

Unfortunately, most teenage star bball players and kids in general are so so sensitive and spoiled that they're unwilling to take any type of criticism. They all want to be coddled and patted on the back every day.

Mixed feelings. I was fortunate to grow up in Louisville during the 70s and 80s and having the opportunity to watch Knight, Crum, Digger, and the team 70 miles to the east of Louisville. No ESPN, but all of their games were shown on local tv. I have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished. He should be proud. Not only of his on court results, but for the out of the spotlight acts, such as what he did for Landon Turner (Hell of a player, as mentioned before), and the conscious effort to give credit to those who shaped and taught him the game, such as Clair Bee and Pete Newell. His humility and kindness in acts such as those show a side not emphasized by the media, and show a respect for the game and it's history, while understanding the bigger picture.

On the flip side, the bullying and brashness just never set well with me. As a life long UL fan, Crum was the exact opposite in regards to approach in coaching. Both were highly successful. I just preferred Denny's approach to Bob's. The standards he set for his team were sometimes hard to live up to for himself. His actions in Puerto Rico and the chair throwing were inexcusable and embarrasing to IU and the game as a whole. As for other "stories" that have transpired over the years, such as the bull whip, his "discipline" methods, the seeming pettiness of feuds with Alford and Coach K....
(although I always like the shots he took at Lou Henson for some reason: sidebar: I remeber a story when IU was losing big to Illinois. Knight was quoted as saying something like, " when I looked down the sideline and saw who I was coaching against, I knew we had a chance. " Good times),

....to his condescension to guys like Jeremy Schapp, it just rubbed me the wrong way. I understand that Knight probably hadn't changed, but access to his every move had increased immeasurably. I always appreciated the way he spoke his mind. I'd like to think I'm the same way in that regard. But there are always consequences in some dose.

All of that being said, he has done far more good than bad. History will be kind to him I think. It makes me stop and think how fast time flies. Doesn't seem like it's been 30 years since the undefeated season. I'm officially old. :lolBIG:

Belch One......he has earned that in my opinion. He won't take his own BS...no. But he took his own BS in the day before he was an 'elder.' He is no fake.

The man is:
1.) Consistent.
2.) Cares about the winning the 'correct' way.
3.) The little things matter.
4.) Work the right way beats ability any day.
5.) No one person is bigger than the team (except the coach...lol)
6.) Success is not a person but an activity....meaning, there is no such thing as a success as a person...a noun. People are either being a success or not being a success by what they are doing at the very moment, and success is a verb. His example: A pro-athlete wins and wins and wins. He retires and gets busted for drug poss. That person is not being a success.... That person was a success but is not a success. Regardless of our past, we can be a success right now. "RIGHT NOW!!" he would yell....if we would do successful things right now.

The man changed my life forever. No doubt. He really did, and I had a great upbringing before him. He changed my life forever. tulsa

In re-reading my post (the one just above) it comes across to me as though I was a player on one of Bob Knight's teams. I am sorry that I conveyed that. Please accept what I say above as a true fan's truth but disregard any of your thoughts that I was a player on one of Coach Knight's teams. Thanks. tulsa

Great coach, but a real jerkoff. He has never once admitted that his own petulant behavior is what got him fired at Indiana, instead he makes himself out to be a victim.

Glad to see so many BK admirers here...I would love to see that happen...I wanted BK to replace Jim O'Brien at Ohio State!

He's a loser, a baby, and he's mean cause he can't handle how weak he is as a man...so he has to take it out on kids...gets his rocks off. Pretender, phony, and all around sack of crap...guarantee you his wife is really the one who wears the pants in his marriage. I'd love to see a night in the Knight house after he goes on one of his tantrums...."Bobby, your in big trouble"....."please don't hurt me"

I have always admired his motivation ways of coaching (military), kinda like a stern Dad being tough on his son but you know he'll be a better player/person in the future.

Think he's most proud of his record of graduating players over his coaching record........

Self indulgent overated all around mean person, only fitting he does a reality show. The man won twice as many NCAA championships as Mike Davis, correct? The guy lives in the stone age and the game passed him by many years ago. Please Mister Knight for the 1000th time please spout off how your kids graduate.

He really hasn't shown any passion or fire for several years that I can recall. I'm not saying he's over the hill, but his teams have been consistently mediocre @ TTech, and he just doesn't seem to have his heart in it anymore.
